What is the differance between the 1st and 2nd gen 12V engines. Is the more computer control, different turbo sizing, pumps, etc. How are they getting more power? Better injecters? Computer control? Also did any second gen 12V's come with 6- speeds? Any help would be much appreciated.

Up to the time the 24V came out. The 12 v didn't have any more computer controll than our truck. But it had a much better injection pump.

The 2nd gen's run a P7100 pump. It can push a lot more fuel than our VE can. Our VE pump is lubed by the fuel it passes threw. The P7100 is lubed by engine oil. This helps it push more fuel without the wear we would see on a cranked up VE.

The main differences between the engines is a different timing cover and gears to acept the P7100. The fan assy is mounted in a different position than out trucks run. It uses a different fuel pump that our model uses.

Hea guy's if I forgot something speakup.

different turbo sizing,

Yes, we have H1C turbo, 2nd gens come with a HX35, and I believe they were all waste gated, and no, none of the 2nd gens came stock with a 6 speed transmission. But Philip is right, the main reason they make so much more power than our trucks is a fuel pump that is capable of flowing more fuel.

Not all the 2nd gens came with HX35's. Some came out with WH1C's which are waste gated H1C's. I think it was the early model auto trucks that had them.

No more polution control that ours.

The biggest difference is the fan mounted in a different position and the longer injection pump. A few of the guy's here that have done the swap says the injection pump is real close to the master cylinder.

I can't remember for sure. But I think there was an issue with the left side engine mount and that same big injection pump.

There aren't any problems on our trucks that a large amount of money will not correct. :D

OOooooo. I see. No more polution control or anything else that would prohibit dropping one into a 1st gen?

Except for a catalytic converter which all 2nd gen 12 valve's have. But that would not need to stay on for the swap you may be thinking about. (not talking legalities here. )

On edit: Just noticed you're from way up north, maybe cat converter issues don't apply up there...

Yeah, in Ontario we have emitions control and testing pretty well on par with California. They are pretty strict up here. However, for our trucks (I'm not sure if this applies to newer diesels) all they do is a visual. There can be no more than five seconds worth of smoke per minute at idle, and they watch for 5 minutes. This makes it realy easy to pass our trucks. The crew needed a mojor tuneup and it still passed. As soon as you put your foot on the pedal, black smoke would just emit from the pipe. But it still passed. :D

Edit- As for the swap I will oneday do it if I found a motor cheap enough. I am just a little cought up in the power thing. :D I mean, dosen't everyone want 300-400 hp for just tootleing around without a load... ;) And with a load! You gotta have more than that! :-laf
