I just bought a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 at a repo sale. it has the 250HP engine . what is the difference between it and the 305hp other than 55hp, I didnt even know there was a 250hp. is it just the computer program or internals. thanks

Programing only unless you have an early early 03 then you may have some internal differences.

250 is that California "special" as i call it. Believe it used different pistons IIRC, along with programming .

You did not state whether it has an auto or a standard trans? If it is an auto, you have 47RE vs a 48RE in the later models. No big deal, Bill Kondalay, who owns DTT, told me he prefers the 47 over the 48... , he said,"less mass". Not really sure I follow that, but I trust him.

If you have a standard trans, and I am totally not sure on this, but I believe they changed that also.

pistons and piston oiling, valves and seats, software

Thats about it...

The 250hp isnt the Cali. emissions. The 250 is the standard diesel, the HO was an optional engine, originally only available with the NV5600, but later with the 48re. The HO wasnt available in, I believe, 6 states, Cali. and Mass. being two of them. The 235hp was the only one you could get in Cali. and maybe others, like Mass. but I cant remember for sure. 235hp and 250hp applications first were only available with the 47re and NV4500, but later came with the 48re when it also became available in the HO.

The 47re can be upgraded with nearly all the 48res internal parts that are stronger/better, and a programmer takes the 235/250hp engines up to HO power before adding more power. So if you got 100hp on an HO, the 235/250 would gain 155hp, or so they say
