I just bought a 2002 2500 with the 6spd. Looking at the forum it appears it has the Cummins "HO" engine with more HP and torque than the auto. My truck also appears to have the trailer towing package.

My questions-

What are the actual differences between the "HO" and the "regular" Cummins?

What rear end gears do I likely have (2WD crew cab short bed)?

What are the weaknesses/strengths of the "HO"?

What mileage can I expect from this combination?

Thanks!

Kirt

The ho makes 10 more hp and think 55 lbs more tq? they have a slighty higher compression ratio (17:1), different injection pump, ecm, slightly smaller injectors, and a six speed transmission.

rearend gearing is either 3. 54 or 4. 10, probably 3. 54. Main weaknesses of HO are that they are limited around 550 hp due to internal mechanics of the injection pump and that they also don't handle timing mods as well b/c of the higher c/r. As far as mileage when mine was stock (see sig) I got around 20 give or take. hope that helps. Welcome to the cummins family!

you can get a modified VP pump that will actually help you make more power than a standard output truck but you have to fork over the bucks for a modified VP (not just a hotrod VP)

I noticed the line about the smaller injectors. Is that why I hear the H. o responds especially well to an injector upgrade rather than just a box?

my understanding from previous posts is that:

----------------- HO ---------------------------------- SO

Compression 17:1 ---------------------------------- 16. 7:1

boost 20-21 ------------------------------------------- 18-19

injectors smaller

timing slightly advanced

Pump VP44 smaller plunger/piston

has slightly better cooling for pistons

+15 HP from rated injectors (ie. 100=115)

-15 from rated HP on timing boxes

trans 99% 6spd ----------------------------------- 5spd and auto

if you are at 2000RPM and 60mph you have 4. 10

if you are at 2000RPM and 70mph you have 3. 54

hope I got everything right.
