What is the origin of "OK" (A Doc Tinker kind of question)

OK ... so whats the origin of the word/phrase "OK"?



Does anyone know the real story?

I think it was Woodrow Wilson that first coined the phrase.

I though OK came about when the postal service made up abbreviations for all the states. When was that, anyway? They didn't have the two letter abbreviations when I was a kid.

I'm gonna guess somewhere between '71 and '74. My mom told me about it one day when I came home from school.
