Wasnt there an update to the torque listed in the maintenance manual I thought I remembered reading that on here before but now I cnat find it. Thanks... . of course it is a 12valve

I use 40, but I don't think it's really critical. The torque is too high in the manual.

I agree with Joe, you don't want to overtighten the plug and strip the threads out of your pan #ad
or you'll really be in deep... oil! It's not like you can easily remove and replace the oil pans on these rigs.

No doubt you will break that darn thing if it is on too tight. I just finished the oil change about an hour ago and torqued it to 50 ft/lbs. That even seemed too tight knowing it's inherent weakness. I think it's a gonner... time to order the finger touch drian valve from Geno's. Doesn't the owners manual say 60 ft/lbs??

The manual does say 60 ft-lb but that is an error. It is supposed to be 40. Get the finger touch drain plug from Geno's. You won't need to worry about it again.

I have never used a torque wrench on an oil drain plug in my life. When I change the oil on mine, I just give it a good firm snugging with the ol' 3/8 ratchet and go on with it. Believe me, it's always plenty tight when I go to remove it the next time.

non-mathematically speekin'-- if the plug borders on PITA to remove, then calibrate your wrench-arm's memory to go Almost, but not quite, that tight... only time any of mine have ever dripped is when the washer was lost... . in other words, torque to a manly, but not painful, uuhhhg ... this thing only needs to clamp a mildly deformable washer between 2 flat steel surfaces, and do so in spite of the horrendous vibrations these beasts generate, without backing out... no sense overstressing the sheetmetal to spite the rubber... . rich

The oil drain plug torque spec. of 60 lbs. ft. for the 12v engines and 44 lbs. ft. for the 24v engines were amended to 40 lbs. ft. for both 12v and 24v engines in late 1998.
