I was changing my Alternator. To facilitate this endevour I removed the filter box and intake tube. This very rusted device was attached to the compressor side of the Turbo.

Command valve for the wastegate, as indicated by @GCroyle

It's not hard to change. You will get boost related faults, thou I can't recall the exact code.

Given it condition, how difficult will it be to change? When it does fail what code will be thrown?

Not always with a Code, but if you only get around 20psi then it's dead.
You can think of it as an electronically controlled boost elbow, only with it working you see the 32psi boost that you want to see.

I was not aware they had a metal case. Thought it was plastic. Easy to tell you're from where they use a lot of ice melt. I'd suggest checking your frame, suspension, and brake lines for rust.

I have already replaced all my brake lines, front and rear differential, from rust.
The suspension is ok. I'm going to have to treat the frame at some point soon.

Go with Fluid Film, that's the only thing that really stops a badly rusted frame from rotting away entirely. Needs to be re-done every year before salt season.
It's cheap and done in half an hour with a spray gun.

I bought 4 Spray Cans of Fluid Film, they had a special. I cleaned and filmed the rims of my Subaru's snow tires and installed them yesterday. We'll watch it over the winter.

When I have dry weather, hopefully not too cold, I'll attack the the worst spots on the truck's frame.

Question. What kind of sprayer would you recommend? I could not find, with an internet search, how to clean up after using Fluid Film.
