What is this weird tool used for?

cordless impact wrench..what would you buy?

Lasers for level, plumb, and shooting lines

Anyone know what this odd plier shaped tool could possibly be for? I've had it in my shop for several years now and never have figured out what to use it for.

Back when I did a lot of small engine repair I had a pair of pliers much like those. They were used to bend the end of the throttle cable where it connected to the motor... kind of an "S" shaped bend, but with sharp corners.

They would probably work on spring type hose clamps too.

It's for removing and installing those spring type hose clamps, such as the Radatior clamps. Moose00 Oo.

You might be right. I seriously do not know what they are for. Spring clamps remover might explain why the jaw portion is so wide apart in relation to the handles.

Here is a more close up pic of the jaw portion.

No I have some of the old spring clamp pliers and they have a groove cut in the jaws to fit over the spring clamps and they close together to allow you to expand the clamps more, These appear to be for a specific use but I sure don't know what. I have some strange old military tools though that were designed for a paticular job.

Well we have at least something in common! I have a pair of the pliers also, bought them new from Mercury outboard dealer, they are/were for removing the locking washer on the propeller of a 1984 Mercury 200 hp. and others I'm sure. bg

Cool. I asked my friend on Sunday evening what it was for. He made the tool many years ago when he worked at OTC. The one I have is the prototype and he does not remember exactly what it was made for. Obviously it was custom designed for some specialty purpose. I guess I will give it a try next year when I work on the lower unit on my Mom's 85 Merc I/O. If I understand correctly, the lip on one side is what I would use to get under the back of the bent down locking tabs to bend them out. Does the notched tip of the pliers pry against the center shaft or something like that?

I went to the garage and found my pliers. They are not exactly like yours, only the side with the pointed jaw is different. I also still have the Mercury, the lock washer that sercures the prop is preformed and fits undr the nut, it has tabs which are then bent into indentations in the prop housing to lock the nut after it is tightened. To unlock the lockwasher, the pointed side of the pliers is placed in the center drilled hole in the prop shaft and the clip end fits beneath the washer tab to lift it out of the indentation. Since the nut is recessed inside the exhaust port of the prop, the pliers do make it much easier to unlock the lockwasher. My pliers have "Taiwan" stamped in them and the #91-36277. They look like they were made in Taiwan too. Whatever I paid for them from the dealer was outrageous, I expect the OTC made ones would have been more expensive. :) bg
