Ok guys, I've got the kore chase setup in as of last night. I got the truck aligned today with the stock wheels on, so the little metal clips won't scratch the new welds  In any case, I want to put the tires/rims on but don't have lug nuts. Local auto parts stores don't have them, but walmart may - I haven't checked yet.

In any case, several people that I've spoken with have recommended Gorilla lug nuts. If any of you have used them, what are your impressions? They have like 20 styles, it's hard to figure out which is the right one for our truck... I think its the extra long chrome acorn style - who knows.

Anyway just hoping for some lug nut advice from those with Kore Welds. What length did you get? I heard they were supposed to be 9/16 by 2. 5" length. . Thanks!

Well I've determined the 96198XLSS is the one - stainles steel 'duplex extra long' is the style/size. They are 9/16 by 2. 3" long. The problem is nobody has them at all. Summit Racing can 'special order' which they estimate will take 2 weeks. Argghh where can I find some friggin lug nuts!? Going nuts over here staring at my new welds and toyos and not being able to put them on...

First. . is there not enough of a lip on the KORE wheel to grab the outside edge of it with the alignment clamp, if not that would just turn me off completely on those wheels. I do alignments every day and absolutely hate it when wheel manufactures do that.

Second. . I can't believe they didn't come with lug nuts. Are the holes recessed?

Nope, they don't come with lug nuts. As far as the lip on the wheel to grab the outside edge, I'm really not sure what would be necessary, or how exactly those alignment clips look - so I'm sorry I can't really help. I just got as far as hearing there would be metal clips on my rims and I decided I might as well align it with the stockers on, and then throw the new tires/rims on... Now I'm just waiting for the lug nuts.

It's amazing, hardly anyone in the country has that size of lug nut for our trucks... summit racing was one of the only places that could even verify the part number, and they said special order 2 weeks. Finally I found this website out of texas, and they happen to have 5 sets of the gorilla stainless lugs in stock in PA. So hopefully it won't take too long till they get here to OH, and I'll have pics!

Cool, can't wait to see them Oo. if you think about it try and do a close up of the wheel edge.

I have a set of lugs here for my truck that are chrome acorn, 2" tall, 9/16" thread that take a 22mm socket. I was going to use them to dress up the stock wheel and ditch the bogus cap but never did.

My local tire shop got them for me and I don't know the brand.

they need to be 2. 5" I believe. The gorilla lugs I got are 2. 3", so they should do the trick. They have 3" but I thought that might stick out too far. I got the polished stainless steel, because I heard that the chrome plating might get nicked off and start to rust once an impact wrench or whatever hit them... We'll see how they work out, I can't wait to get it all on!

As for the lip - you can look at a pic of it here http://koreperformance.com/products.htm , but don't click the link. I'm not sure if that's enough of a look to give you an idea. If not I can try to snap a pic. . I've been going down to the garage to 'visit' and drool over them every few days ;) Once you click into the link that describes the wheel, they have the wrong picture. The one they show in the detailed pic is a much much deeper dish rim, which actually looks a lot cooler.

I know the 2" ones I have fit my stock wheels. Are you saying they need to be longer due to a recessed hole? The link you gave looks like a good enough lip for "outside" alignment clamps provided a tire with bead protector is not used. Many times I have let the air out on custom wheels, put the clamp on then aired back up.

Matt - again I don't know much about alignment machines, but it's my thought that the wheels will work fine with the machine - I just didn't want to take the risk of scratching them with the metal clips. Maybe I don't understand how they attach. Oh well.

As for the lugs - that's my understanding about the length, but again, I'm not sure. I am just going by the size that Greg Boardman, Kore, and Weld recommended. BTW the people at weld could not be more rude on the phone, lol.

Next time we get a custom wheel on the shop I will try to remember to take a pic. Its just a 3 point clip that would grab on the outside of the wheel for custom wheels and if any part were to touch the face of the wheel I would put a small piece of tap to protect it.

Ewew. .

Matt, thats a great idea on the tape. I'm sure at some point again in the future I'm going to need an alignment and am not going to put the stock rims/tires back on just for that. Does the miniscule amount of thickness of the tape set the alignment off any?

No because once the clamp is in place a "run out" procedure is done to calibrate the clamp to the wheel. Basically the machine takes 3 different measurements by rotating the wheel to 3 different locations and those measurements are split to come up with a true center for the alignment head. This is mainly done because the clamp will flex when it is clamped onto the wheel so its never the same for each wheel, the run out procedure dials that in.

Hi LightmanE300,

Did you get your lugnuts for the Kore Weld wheels? Are they the right ones, part number 96198XLSS? Did you get locks too? How about some pictures. Also what is the link for the website?

Thanks,

Marty

Marty, I did get the Gorilla stainless lug nuts part 96198xlss. They are the perfect size and fit. I haven't gotten any pictures taken yet of the truck, but will the next time I shine it up (atv rally this weekend left it pretty muddy, and I was only able to rinse it off). The same size/shape lugs are available in chrome as well, but I worried about sockets dinging the chrome and chipping the plating/rusting, so I went with the stainless. They are shiny enough you'd have to look really close to tell the difference. .

Here's the link to the lugs. http://www.sfxperformance.com/parts/GOR96198XLSS.htm

They were cheaper than summit by a little more than $20, and they were the only place I could find after 10-15 calls that had them in stock - let alone able to buy online. .

I will say that the last time I went to the atv event (had the stock tires) I had a lot of trouble getting up the hill to the parking lot - in 4wd. I was slipping all over the place and at one point the truck was sliding sideways downhill which was pretty scary. While it was slightly drier this time, people were still having trouble, and I don't think the toyo's even spun once. .

My brother in-law stopped by today with his Weld Cheyenne's and Nitto Terra Graplers, I don't see a way to get the alignment clamp on the wheel, The Terra Grapplers have a rim protector like The BFG's. I will have to investigate a different clamp.

His lugs were a special star that were all locking and take a special socket to get them off. If you use a standard nut looks like you will also need a thin-wall socket as they are counter sunk.

Thanks LightmanE300.

I got the following error message from your link.

Yes, I had a body shop do it professionally. They had the right stuff to scuff, chemical prep, primer, and then clear coat. . They did a fantastic job, and it's really thick. Then I hit them with one of the best products ever made - Maxima Chain Wax. . Available in most motorcycle shops, it sprays on in a can, and in about 15 mins leaves a THICK wax coating, that lasts a long time.
