i am thinking about buying this dump truck but the guy don't know who the maker of the engine is,,,,,,,, it's a 8. 2 or 8. 3 he said ... ... . the truck is a 1986 Chevy c-70 diesel ,,,5 speed , 2 speed rear end ... . 180,000 miles on it,,not in bad shape for the year... no leaks ,good clutch. 50% on the tires... it comes with another rear end and transmission... .

he said the only thing major is when you take it out of 2nd gear you can hear the trans making a whining sound,, he said he thinks its a bearing on its way out?????$$3900 a good price... .

I believe it is called a fuel miser and was built by Detroit Diesel. We had a couple of them in our utility trucks back in the 80's. They were not a particlularly powerful or long lived engine.

should i not buy it ,,??,,,,,is 180,000 to many miles for that engine????

i could use all the help i can get or comments on this engine

THANKS... ..... THE CONCRETE GUY

If it is a Fuel Miser with 180,000 miles it is the longest lasting one I ever heard of. But than it would probabably easily go another six miles!

I'm going to guess it is a 8. 2 detroit, if it is I wouldn't buy it. Lots of problems with that motor. Hope this helps

My guess would be a 8. 2L Detroit. I have a service manual for our C 70 and according to it if the letter in the fifth placement is a F it has a 8. 2N Detroit, if it is a G it has a 8. 2T.

My neighbor had a red dump like the one you pictured that he bought new. Sold it at his auction when he went out of business with 180,000 miles. Got to where he hired me with my CUMMINS ( he called it a locamotive motor) to pull his trailer and move stuff around for him before he quit working. It got a rebuild (major) every 25-30,000 miles. Another had a blue/green one with a Cat and automatic. Motor would last twice as long as the detroit but the trans was out every single year.

WHAT IS THE COST OF A MAJOR REBUILD:confused: :confused: :confused: :--) :--) :{ :{

unless this truck is free, move on. i'm pretty sure it's an 8. 2 deadtroit. gutless and not well built. remember the GM 6. 2L?

this is just my experience but, I am a mechanic for a concrete company, we have a c-70 with the detroit in it. It's an old peice o s#@t but the motor is still strong and its only on it's second clutch. thats with 180,000 construction miles on it. Are boys beat the smack out of equipment. it's for sale right now, 1500 bucks, in MN if ya want it come and get it. They are kinda down on power, but are truck just keeps goin. Hope this helps ;)

concreteguy,

Don't even think about it unless you like throwing money at equipment and getting little in return. The 8. 2 Detroit is a four cycle engine, nothing like the two cycle screamers Detroit used to build. Detroit 8. 2 is naturally aspirated, 8. 2T is turbocharged. I used to drive a Chevy school bus with one of these engines. You would think with about 500 cubic inches it would have decent power but it doesn't. My 7. 3 Navistar in my Ford Superduty has more power than that engine. My understanding is the oil pump is cast as part of the block and if it gets scored you have to buy a different engine.

Better bet would be to find an International with a DT466 which I see all the time in the Indiana Auto-RV for about the same money. Still not the engine the Cummins is but better than the 8. 2 Detroit.

Good luck!

Trent

I have worked on a few of the 8. 2n and the8. 2t. Both engines are like tampaxes "DISPOSABLE". Very expensive for parts. A little food for thought, every injector is set to a different spec. Look at the valve cover spec sticker. BTW N stands for natural and T stands for turbocharged.

It's an 8. 2l V8. I had 2 of them. Constant problems. Mostly leaky headgaskets - coolant in the oil. Look around and buy something better. Unless mine were plugged in all night they wouldn't start at 50*.

If it is an 8. 2, they don't have the best reputation in the world, but Detroit is setting up to do factory rebuilding and offer a complete through their dealers. Just spent a week at their factory setting up the equipment they are going to reprocess this engine with. If you can steal the truck and consider a factory replacement engine, you might be ok.
