My 94 5-speed was running fine, changed the oil and now it pours out the BLUE smoke.

smokes alot at idle and fogs the neighborhood when driving,



also runs rough at low engine speeds,



I made sure the oil level is correct.



ANY IDEAS????

Have you checked coolant levels also? but coolant wont make blue smoke.



Slipped timing on the injection pump can make white smoke, I guess its possible it could make blue smoke. That would explain the rough idle also. Checking timing isnt the easiest thing to do, a good diesel shop should be able to diag that within an hour.



Blue smoke is typically oil though. have you checked your turbo and intercooler for oil? Doesnt take much oil to smoke em out.



How many miles on this truck? any bombs? plz give us some more info. .

Does it get better when the engine warms up?



How many miles are on the engine? Are you doing the change for the first time after buying a new truck? If so which oil did you use? Synthetic?
 
First time oil change on a new purchase, the oil level is right.



Cloudy blue smoke when cold AND when warmed up.



Blue smoke MUST be oil? correct?



I am going to check for oil in intercooler,



any other ideas??????

Definitely check was Reb. B said..... but also check ur oil level now... . as u stated it was at the correct level... check it now and it shoudl still be where it was when u filled it back up to the proper level when u did the change... . thatll definitely tell you if its an oil related smoke... . u can also tell when its oil... but check those two things out... .
 
I had a truck that smoked blue from fuel the return cheak valve was stuck and it over fueled at idle like pinching off the line from the injectors.



and the turbo could be laeking oil into the intake.
 
I checked bottom I/C hose for oil, it is relatively clean, no large amounts of oil on that side of turbo.



How many qts of oil should be added on a 94 with a oil/filter change?
 
the return check is on the passenger side of the injection pump i really dont know i had mine fixed at the local shop in WV some one who knows pumps more could tell you more good luck
 
It turns out I probably have injector pump problem,

two injectors are getting nothing but low pressure-foamy fuel.



Any ideas-help on finding a used or rebuilt pump?

94 12 valve,

Did you check your overflow valve to make sure it's not stuck open or something and the fuel pressure dropped? Maybe you have a leak sucking a lot of air in your fuel line somewhere between the prefilter & lift pump, but a leak like that should drip fuel when you're not running.



A couple of notes to everyone troubleshooting smoke:



Blue smoke can just as likely be caused by fuel as oil.

White smoke is fuel that is basically "smoldering" (very bad timing, injector, etc. )

When diagnosing smoke, smell it! Fuel will have a strong rawish diesel smell, oil will smell something like an old gasser burning oil.

So far, I agree with the previous stated posts. I would check oil level. If it is what it was when you filled the crank case, then go to pump and overflow valves. If oil is down go to turbo. good luck!!

Thanks for inputs, I believe my oil level has actually increased!



I read that LEAKING- FAULTY injector plungers can leak fuel by, eventually letting fuel work its way to oil pan.



Is this correct?
 
Yes it is possible for a pump problem to leak fuel into your oil.



Pull your dipstick and drip a couple three drops of oil on a tissue. After a minute or two look for any sort of halo that forms around the drop on the tissue. If so it's very likely there's fuel in your lube.

Thanks for that tip on checking fuel in oil,

I have never heard of that one, but I'll try it!



Some people have told me to check the overflow-pressure check valve, if this was a problem wouldn't it affect the other 4 cylinders that seem to be getting the correct amount of fuel to the injectors?



The #1 in front and the 4th cylinder back are getting mostly air with just a little fuel when I crack the line at the injector while it is running. - there are no line leaks.



Any thoughts?
