Not unlike the watch repair that you attempted when you were seven years old or trying to understand why the radio-controlled car stopped running (did the engine seize-up or a bad battery on the controller), I find it interesting to learn about “what makes it tick.”
Now, have you ever stopped to wonder what it is that makes you tick?
We all have favorite writers that are able to take a complex subject and make it understandable. In terms of human personality, Dr. Mark Barnes’ articles in the magazine Motorcycle Consumer News captivated my interest. So, I called MCN’s editor and asked if I could contract with Dr. Barnes to write for the TDR.
The time-frame was early 2001 and the TDR’s web site/discussion forums were growing daily. However, the anonymity of web site correspondence was causing problems with what was envisioned as a helpful community. Why was there conflict and unfriendly discourse?
Dr. Barnes’ first column in the TDR “Web Site Guidelines and the Fragile Nature of Civilization” will help you understand the dynamics of the web site and the struggles that the TDR membership was having in 2001.

Mark Barnes is a moto/automotive journalist and clinical psychologist as well as a regular writer for the Turbo Diesel Register magazine. He’s the author of the book, Why We Ride - A Psychologist Explains the Motorcyclist’s Mind and the Relationship Between Rider, Bike and Road. He’s also a fellow motorhead who is able to combine these two worlds in genuinely thought-provoking ways.
