Auto transmission, exhaust brake, EGT questions

I had the tensioner replaced and now im having this noise. Could it be the water pump going out?

I would guess it is your new tensioner, once the spring gets broke in the noise will probably go away.

well i'da guessed the tensioner, and it could still be if it wasn't squeaking before hand, and yes sometimes the water pump can do this as well. take belt off, and spin each pulley and see if any are rough.

When I installed a Fluid Dampener I got a sound like that from the eng. Might have been even louder/harsher.
Nobody could tell me what it was coming from so i eventually just removed it and installed a 6.7 HO unit.
Not quite as smooth but no hideous snapping either.

Before you replace anything, spray some WD40 on the serpentine belt while the engine is running. Spray both sides of the belt - be conservative and spray short bursts multiple times to cover all the area of the belt. If the noise changes or goes away, it is likely the belt has been contaminated.

V-belts and serpentine belts can emit a variety of sounds when they are contaminated with a very small amount oil, coolant, or other foreign matter and those sounds could be sounds that you would not think a belt would capable of making.

Yes, WD40 on a belt. It will not harm the belt as it is a water displacement product. It will temporarily give the belt lubricity and temporarily stop any belt noise if the belt is the cause. WD40 will not harm the belt, nor leave any residue.

Don't take my word for it - ask around.

wouldn't water do the same thing without oil residue?

Water has too much surface tension and will likely bead up over the belt surface. I have used soapy water, which helped reduce the surface tension, but sometimes the soapy water made the belt slip on pulleys making it harder to diagnose for the noise problem.

The WD40 gives enough lubricity to stop any belt related noise, but maintains enough friction as to not slip on a pulley.

Had even louder squeal...my brandy new premium belt (a PM for FL trip) turned out to be toooo good, too hard and inflexible, would have lasted to the moon & back. Installed my old, used, spare & all is right with the world. Hmmm, 'bout time to head out again...nah, I'll leave it alone.

No never spray anything on a serpentine belt other than water you will destroy the belt

If it is indeed the belt that is squealing or rattling from some sort of oil or antifreeze contamination which causes the belt to glaze in places, the cure i have always used is toothpaste. The grit in a smear of ordinary toothpaste (colegate) on the belt will break the glaze on the belt and squeal is gone.........has worked for me for years

Is the Gatorback belt still available? The Gatorback wouldn't give you that chirp when you shut down the motor. That's the only one I've ever used until I installed a new w/p a couple months ago and put on a new Dayco belt from Oriellys, now I have the Constant high pitched squeal sound. It did stay quiet after I pressure washed the motor for about an hour of running at normal temperature. And yes it got a new Gates Tensioner from Geno's a year ago, but now I'm reading that a vibration damper could give you that high pitch squeal ? But YES the water put a lid on the noise for an hour or so. lol Maybe a water injection system next? lol
