Hey new to the forum, my name is Bobby I live in CA I just bought a 2004 5. 9 with 21k miles and I was wondering what oil pressure it should be at idle and full throttle. Thanks for the help.

From 99 FSM: Minium at idle, 10 pounds, at 2500 rpm, 30 pounds. The regulating valce opens at 65 pounds. Welcome to the forum. bg

the gauge on the dash is a idiot gauge it gets a signal from the ecm to tell teh gauge what the gauge should read at a given temp and load on the motor. At 7 psi the gauge will read normal. On my manual oil pressure gauge cold at idle 60 psi at 2500rpm 85 psi warm idle 30 psi and at 2500 rpm 60 psi

Thanks

Hey thanks for the posts back should I get a manual oil pressure guage or just not worry about it. I am also looking to get a pyrometer but I am not sure when I drill and tap into the exhaust manifold should I just use grease on the drill and tap and vacuum the reminents up, or should I remove the turbo and or exhaust manifold? Thanks. Bobby

Maybe another dumb question, but how do I know if I have a 2004. 5 truck or 2004, my truck was made in mexico with a 7/2004 date on the door sticker.

Your truck is an 2004. 5 any one built after 1/2004 is 04. 5 ,325 hp ,cat,third injection and all ... ...

unless you are someone who is anal about monitoring every system, i wouldn't worry about the lube oil pressures. however, if you do end up monitoring it, you can start to track trends in lower than normal lube oil pressure. once you start to know what is normal for your engine, you will see slight changes based on the condition of the oil. . if you start to get fuel dilution, you will see it drop and you could catch it before any damage is done [first thing that will go toast it turbo bearings, but it is an easy external component to change]

i am quite anal about monitoring my engines. .

Thanks again for the posts back I used to own a ford ranger and go on dezertrangers.com but they were not nearly as helpful and nice as you guys are, thanks alot.

Idiot Gauges!!!!!!!!!! I know they use them but why? This is a big insult to anyone who wants and needs acurate info.

A guy can't even trust them anymore.

BTW, my company has a ford ranger with this kind of gauges on it. Actually I started it without oil in it to prove my point to the guy who drives it. ( And yes it did show 40+ psi).

Re: Drill & tap exh. manifold

In addition to using grease on the drill bit and tap, I picked a spot on the back half of the manifold with a flat bottom side. (As apposed to over the top of the turbo. )

After drilling & tapping the hole, (With grease. ) I inserted a pencil shaped

magnet and was able bring out a small amount of metal.

It worked for me.

cost. . a switch costs $$, while a pressure transducer costs $$$$ and is not as reliable as a switch. plus the extra wire needed for making the transducer work costs ¢¢. total cost on one engine may not seem like much, but spread it across 100k engines, makes a noticeable difference in the CEO's year end bonus
