I am going to be placing an order for synthetic oil, and was wondering what the transfer case uses. I know people recommend 75w-90 for the Diffs, syn ATF for the trans, but not sure what my truck takes in the transfer case?

Thanks

I would use AMSOIL product# FGR01 75W-90 Synthetic Long Life Gear Lube. Hope this helps.

May want to check that out on YOUR website! It says auto trans fluid! Don't worry, it gets confusing some times. :--)

Ditto on that... service manual recommends 2 qts of ATF +4, but based on my experience which is consistant from other members, you will need 2. 5 qts. I further recommend Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 in front/rear diffs. You will need 7 qts to cover both with a little remaining. Refer to TSB for fluid level recommendations. Good luck !

ATF+4 should be used in your X-fer case.

you can also use the amsoil 5w-30 syncromesh, it's what we reccomend for the t-case. it has better HD performance under big HP.

I'm researching which fluid to use in my NV271, and see that ATF is recomended.

You suggest the AMSOIL 5-30 syncromesh which (if I'm reading this right) is a "manual syncromesh transmission fluid".

Is it ok to use the manual fluid in the NV271 although the ATF is called for..... or..... I guess what I'm asking is: When the manufacturer calls for the ATF and you recomend the manual, what makes the manual fluid a better choice.

I'm wanting to change/add the best stuff I can.

How about the NV5600 transmission..... recomendation there?

Ok... . diff's too :) What do you suggest for the AAM 9 1/4 front and 11 1/2 rear with limited slip?

.

Going with AMSOIL, I recommend:

NV 5600 MTF 5W-30 Synchromesh gear lube.

Front and rear diffs: SVG 75W90

PM me if I can be of more assistance.

I use Royal Purple Synchromesh (the Amsoil MTF 5w30 oil equivalent) in my trnasfercase with good results... my transmission hated it, but my transfercase likes it. I also run RP 85w140 MaxGear in the rear of my truck, 75w90 Mobile in the front...

I run 5w30 Amsoil MTF in my NV5600 with good results and will most likely switch over to that when the time comes to flush the tcase again.

Oo. I completed the oil change of the differentials and the transmission & transfer case. Oo.

Used Amsoil Manual Transmission Fluid 5w-30 in both the trans & transfer.

Used Severe Gear 75w-90 in the diff's.

I also put a Mag-Hytec diff cover on the rear AAM 11. 5 diff.

Thanks everyone for the information here..... it helped a lot! :)

How much fluid will the diffs hold now with Mag-hytec covers installed? Both front and rear? I hope that 12 quarts is enough because that is all I ordered. I ended up going with 75-110 amsoil severe gear, I thought that it would be a happy medium over 75-90 or 75-140. Anyway thanks again!

You're going to need about 13-14 Qts. since yours is a 3500.

I didn't install a front Mag-Hytec cover on the front, so I only needed the 4. 75 pints of 75w-90 there.

The instructions with the Mag-Hytec rear cover state:

"13. Remove the dipstick assembly and add in the new gear lube. Your new cover will take approximately 6 qt's to fill to bottom of axle tube (lower line on dipstick) and 7. 5 - 8 qt's. to bottom of axle (top line on dipstick). "

When I was through adding the oil to the rear diff - I checked and found I was about 1/2 qt over full - and drained it to the top mark on the dipstick.

So... ... about 7. 5 qt's in the rear for me and 2. 5 qt's in the (stock) front.

These are the AAM axle's:

9 1/4 front

11 1/2 rear

(info on what axles you have is on the sticker inside your glove box)

Well 12 quarts is just enough to fill both diffs with the mag-hytec covers. I ended up with 7. 5 quarts in the rear (put the level right about to the top line). And then put in 4 quarts in the front diff with the mag cover. So now I have a half quart to spare!

The best part of all of this was my Amsoil man delivered it to my door! :) (Thanks Heath)

fj40dave, would you mind letting me know where you purchased your Amsoil lube. I'm finally getting ready to install my gifts from Santa!

Thanks in advance.
