When my truck had approximately 68k on the odometer I experienced a problem with Jacobs exhaust brake engagement. Carlton Bale, Cummins-Jacobs engineer, diagnosed, on this forum, a bad APPS as the cause. Carlton told me the replacement would be covered under warranty. My local dealer told me it was not covered under warranty and refused to work on it. Backed by Carlton's outstanding assistance I returned to my selling dealer and the part was replaced under warranty. The problem was corrected.

Today, with 94k on the odometer, I had to pay for parts and labor to replace the engine MAP sensor. The service writer told me this repair was not covered under warranty.

I have reviewed my Dodge owner's manual and have not been able to locate an authorative source of information as to what is covered under the 5 year 100,000 mile engine warranty and what is covered under the Dodge 3 year 36,000 mile warranty.

Can fellow TDR members advise me where I can find out what is covered under warranty? I don't feel comfortable having service writers tell me what is covered under warranty and what is the owner's responsibility without documentation to back them up.

Thomas,

I looked for a warranty booklet in my owners manual package but couldn't find one. With my feeble and declining memory I don't remember now if there was once one in the plastic envelope and it is now misplaced or if I never had one and it is a previous truck I'm remembering.

Is there another source of this info other than purchasing another warranty booklet? At 94k miles it's a little late to buy one.

NScott and Shovelhead,

I think you've both explained it. I was thinking maybe that was the way warranty coverage questions were determined.

Here is a scan of the Warranty Information booklet formodel year 2000. My son tells me the wording for model year 2001 is identical. Of more interest to me is the wording in part A. regarding when the engine warranty begins. Seems like the when-it-begins information could be worth a lot more than the cost of a MAP sensor!

Thomas,

Thanks for taking the time to attach the scanned information. That answers my question. I didn't think my service writer was lying to me or cheating me, I just wanted to read it with my own eyes. Like Ronald Reagan said about the Soviet Union: "trust but verify. "

If you are referring to the position that some have recently suggested that the Cummins engine warranty begins when the Dodge warranty expires at 3 years and 36k and runs an additional 5 years and 100k for a total of 8 years and 136k on the engine, I think that idea is clarified on page 275 of my 2001 Dodge owner's manual. That page shows a bar graph with the various warranty coverage laid out on a time and mileage line. The way I read it is the Cummins engine is covered for a total of 5 years and 100k beginning at the same time as the basic Dodge 3/36 warranty begins and running concurrently for 3yrs/36k then continuing on for an additional 2 years/64k until 5yrs/100k.

Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

From the model year 2000 Owners Manual : "See your DaimlerChrysler Motors Corporation Warranty Information Booklet for information on warranty coverage and transfer of warranty. " I find no drawing, charts, or any other mention of warranty in the Owners Manual.

The way I read it my engine is covered for 8 years/136,000 miles.

If the Owners Manual conflicts with the Warranty Informationbooklet in model year 2001, it might be worthwhile to fight during the 3/36,000 beyond the 5/100,000.

Tyoical warrenty BS

I would call DC direct and talk with customer relations. As far as I have read on my 2000, EVERYTHING on the motor is covered for 5 years period. Check when the truck went into service as this is the beginning of the warrenty. Don't let up on them. Get your manual out were it shows this and if you have to, contact your state attorney general.

" As far as I have read on my 2000, EVERYTHING . . . "

What exactly have you read? I find nothing spelled out for model year 2000 other than what I've posted above, none of which says "everything" to me.

Things like the clutch are wear items, other than that I believe the engine and everything attached to it (lift pump, etc. ) are covered.

Why not put the shoe on the other foot and have the service writer/Dodge rep show you where it is written that it is not covered?

Seems fair to me.....
