I'm debating on having my transmission guy build my transmission instead of buying a complete unit. what all should be used to build a transmission like the complete unit you would get from say DTT, Suncoast, ATS, etc? I guess I'll use the triple disc TC and whichever valveody the company I choose recommends. What else do I need to upgrade, clutch packs, bands, shafts, etc? This truck will be used to tow a lot and may see the occasional 1/4 mile track, but will also be a daily driver. I would like to get it in the 600's eventually, so I might as well build it to handle it.

do yourself a favor and leave it to the pros like DTT, you can't piece a trans and make it work right IMO

it is a lot of money but money well spent and you will be glad you did in the long run

and when you do it go all the way and get it all, input and out-put shafts 3rd gear drum flex plate etc.

people like DTT know all the in's and out's and can do it right for you the first time.

just my 0. 02

Do it right the first time and be done with it, dont leave something like your trans open to failure because instead of spending 5k you spent 4k and it broke and wiped out your trans! IT WILL BE CHEAPER IN THE LONG RUN! plus later down the road you wont have to go back and buy slightly better parts that could have just been bought the first time!

Let the expert that design and spend everyday building and testing these trannys build it and test it before you get it!

For 5-600+ HP and 1/4 mile runs/towing just get an all billet set up and dont ever worry about it, youll be glad you did.

I agree do it right the first time. I had Michael at HotRodDiesels build mine. He used custom triple disc TC from Dunrite, Dunrite Valve Body kit, Billet shafts from Piers(input, intermediate, output), changed and machined all clutch packs to specific spec, did a number of other secret mods to handle high HP output. Cost was close to the same as full ATS, DTT, etc. billet race transmission. I am around 550rwhp. The results have been great. I have close to 40,000 miles on the transmission, over 150 hard 4wd high boost launches at the track and it is my only vehicle. Never had a problem or broke anything. Find someone you trust and do it right the first time. BTW get a billet flexplate when you do the tc/trans.

JVolpe, why the billet flexplate?

Many with 550+rwhp and full built transmission have broken the stock flexplate while racing. If you see a stock flex plate out of the truck then it is pretty easy to see why. Applying 800-1000ftp torque with built tc/trans on WOT locked up shifts is more than a thin sheet of metal that is more air than solid can take. Add it while the TC is out and saves lots of time and labor later on.

I went with Suncoast on my truck, but now I am going to start pushing NADP. He buys shafts from the same guy Sucoast does and gets his Frictions and steels from the same guy. Big difference is they do their own Valvebody and they will put whatever converter in it you want, including Suncoast. So, as a retailer it makes much more sense to me to use them.

BTW - Aside from the whole Tq Managment System mistake, that Suncoast ran flawlessly behind 600+ hp.

I will probably end up buying the complete unit, but I have a very very good transmission guy and I thought I might let him build me one if I just knew what all to put in it. I don't know if it will save much moeny or not. Just thoguht if my guy could build them, them I wouldn't have to go throu the headache of pulling them and shipping them back in case of a failure, like I ended up doing with one companies trannies. I have been out of the autos for a while now because of the constant bad luck. But I think I will try DTT or maybe ATS. I kinda feel better about DTT, but I am a dealer for ats. I'm sure they both have great trannies. But thanks guys.

Just curious about the flexplate... I'll be having a full DTT rebuild put into my truck in a week or so. My truck is a daily driver and pull an 11,000 5er once a month or so. Should I just have the builder give me a recommendation on the flexplate, or order it when I have him order all the other parts?

If I was in the position to have a local guy build one from scratch. I would look into a Suncoast triple converter and a valve body from HTS.

DO to your location I would either try Goerend or Suncoast. I wouldn't be afraid to build your own transmission. Get a service manual, read it like 3 times, and go to town. I have built 2 of them, one has over 40k on it and sees hard sled pulling. If your going to build your own, go with Goerend, he has any flavor convertor you want, and will help you with any assembly issues you have.

ATS 5 Star

Blacksdieselhp - I originally had a ATS trans with a TripleLok 3 disc which seemed great. After a couple of months I had a warranty claim and ATS sent a whole new trans to be installed with the new 5 Star converter included. It was like night and day. The 5 Star is definately a tight converter. I thought the TripleLok was good but the 5 Star is significantly better. I got the billet flex plate, input shaft and the built trans with the Commander. Since mine is only a 2wd they didn't think I would require the intermediate shaft and I don't believe they make a 2wd output shaft. I believe you would require all the billet internals if you're wanting 600hp - just my 2 cents worth. I'm about 8 miles south of Canton, Ga. if you want to test drive my trans set-up. Also, when the funds permit I'm looking to upgrade the CP3, injectors and etc. I still plan on giving you a call to possibly do the upgrades. Sorry for the late reply as I haven't been using the computer much.
