I'm looking for a good posi or locker steup for my dana 80. Daily driver and i tow 2 weekends a month on average so i have to stay away from the Detriot and tru lock setups. What setups are you guys running that drives well, tows well and hooks up good when its time to play or when you really need that posi.

I`m probably wrong but I don`t think you have much of a choice. The only two that I know of for the Dana 80 is the Trac-Loc and the Detriot Locker. Why not a Detriot Locker I`ve run them since 1967 and never had a problem towing with them. Other than wearing the rear tires but that`s a big foot problem going around corners got to remember to let up a little.

Depending on which ratio you have in your Dana-80, you may have to do some work to make a Detoit drop right in.

I know that the Detroit for the Dana-80 with 4. 10:1 gears is a drop in affair. If you have 3. 54:1 gears - some work has to be done.

Gene (SledPuller) is the only guy I know with a Dana-80/3. 54:1/Detroit combo. He keeps telling us to talk to the place that installed his... instead of giving us the details on what they had to do to make it work in his truck. :D

Straight6Jeff somewhat recently put a Detroit in his 4. 10:1 Dana-80 and seems to really love it.

Well I don`t know,But if you go to the Dana-Spicer site you will find out I was WRONG they now list not only Detroit Locker and Trac-Loc for all ratio`s but they have the ARB Locker listed now to. The listing for the Detroit Locker has been in there for all ratio`s since 2000 that I know of.

I believe that all that has to be done to make the Detroit Locker fit into a 3. 54 rear end is that you need to buy a Model 70HD Detroit Locker and drill the ring gear bolt holes out to the correct size. Call Reider Racing they will be able to help you.

I`ve seen this posted before. What I would like to know is how you fit an 11" ring gear on a 10. 5" carrier. Second I would like to know how you can put D80 carrier bearings on an D70 carrier theres quite some size difference.

I just don`t see how it would work.

I've heard from many people that a detroit is just a bad choice if you tow. And yes heard you have to run a dana 70 carrier and oversize the ring gear holes. As far as i know thats the only thing you have to worry about. I'm running the 3:55 right now dont plan on going 4:11. I know dana corp makes some good aftermarket limited slip setups that are rated 3 times stronger than stock this might be the way to go hmmmmmmm still flustered. I already know that im going to put the detroit in the front dana 60. Just dont want something so tight in the rear

Ok, we'll forget the the difference in ring gear size and carrier bearing size. But tell me how you get a 32 spline D70 Detroit Locker to accept a D80 35 spline axle.

The reference material that has been put up in this thread hasn`t really said how you put a D70 carrier in a D80 axle housing. Only that you drill out the ring gear holes in the Detroit Locker carrier case.

Like I said if you go to the Dana-Spicer site and click on Dana-Spicer Parts and then Dodge-Chrysler you'll find that they make one that fits all ratio's for D80.

ata, the 70HD is a 1. 50" 35 spline shaft, just like the 80. Can you post a link to the Dana-Spicer parts page? I looked all over their site (possibly the wrong one) and can't find it.

Brian

If they make a power-loc for the 80 I would go with that. I have been very happy with the one in my 70. Never know its there till you need it. Still works great after 120K miles.

HillCountrykid, I can't get the link to work. But the best place to get the info from is (drivetrainsuperstores.com) They give all the info. on what fits what and they sell it. In their info. the Dodge 2500 D70 has 32 spline axles and the D80 has 35 spline axles.

PHellen if it were me I'd go with ARB's front and rear. I have them in dana 44's on my Jeep with 4:88's and a TPI 350 and have yet to hurt them (excluding axles LOL). So I'm kinda hooked on ARB's best of both worlds IMHO.

Why would anyone run a Detroit locker on the road???? I have run them for 20 years in all my trail rigs and would never put one in if all the truck did was drive on the pavement. In fact I would just leave an open diff. I have the factory posi and it is more than I will ever need on and off the road. If you don't leave the road leave it alone.

Owners of two-wheel drive trucks that drive in the snow or anywhere but the asphalt jungle need something to help out. Two-wheel drive trucks with open differentials don't go ANYWHERE when the going gets tough.

Four-wheel drive trucks with an open differential in the rear are almost as helpless in similar situations.

ata, the Dodge version (at least the 91-02) has a 1. 40" 32 spline shaft. But the D70HD is a different version that has the right spline count and shaft diameter. I'm not sure how it works because it fits a 10. 5" ring gear.

All this is off of Tractech's Detroit Locker application pdf.

H-C-kid, Well I went through a lot of gear sites and come up with a lot of conflicting info. So what do you want to do, take 10 paces turn and SHOOT and see who's still standing. NO, I remembered where to get the right info. (dodgeram.org) Dave Fritz's info. site on the Dodge Ram. So I'll eat the crow this time your right on the axles. But I still want to know how someone can fit a 11" ring on a 10. 5" carrier and put the larger 11" carrier bearings on the 10. 5" carrier. If is so easy to change the D70 carrier to fit the D80 why hasn't the manufacture done it. Seems to me their loosing a lot money here.

I don't have a clue how the ring gear fits at all.

Maybe since we have a hybrid 80, our carrier bearings are the same size as a 70, or the 70HD is the same size as the 80. I'm only guessing on this one.

All I know is that is has been done several times, so somehow these have the same dimensions.
