From the front page...

Available gearing on the 4500 is 4. 10's for the manual and 4. 44's for the automatic. For the 5500 it's 4. 44's for the manual and 4. 88's for the auto. Ford offers 3. 73, 4. 10, 4. 30, and 4. 88. I could not find any information on Chevy's options.

Also from teh fron page, Aisin 6-speed auto...

1st 3. 74

2nd 1. 96

3rd 1. 34

4th 1. 00

5th . 77

6th . 63

Reverse 3. 54

P. S. Thanks for the gear's...

Ford offers the 430 with 26k gcwr and 488 with 33k gross combined if they only had a Cummins we would have something to talk about

I don't see the double OD helping as the second OD is still only . 69. It would need to get down to a . 50 or maybe . 45 to help with a 4. 88.

No lie. The company truck (F550) has a 4. 88 with the 5spd slush box, even under a medium throttle upshifts are in the 3000 rpm neighborhood, cruising at 70mph (speeding in Ohio ;) ) the tach is at like 2600. Average MPG is 8-9. Pittiful.

A nice I6 {cummins!!!} and a 4. 10 or 3. 73 rear or so would make this a much more profitable truck. But I'm not the one who spec'd it, so I only have that warm "I told you so" feeling when I put 35 gallons of fuel in with under 300 miles on the trip..... :-laf

What would be slick is to drop a 2 speed pumpkin into the S130 with say a 5. 00 low and a 3. 73 high gear.

Exactly what I was thinking, I just dont know what would be involved as I've never seen it done on a pickup. Also would it work on a 4x4 auto. I ask because the closest thing I've seen is the 2 speed setups in heavy duty class 7 & 8 trucks. Dodge will supply us with the platform but we'll still probably have to do some tinkering to get them right.

My last truck at work was a 3500 ram, 5spd manual and a 3:55 rear. That worked really well, but reverse was a bit fast for tight jobsites, especially on rough ground. With the auto shift in the ford that isnt a problem. Some app's might really need a crawler gear, but in my case, I would only like to see a higher rear ratio. If I was fortunate enough to have a real gearbox transmission, I'd love that split rear and probly use that low gear evry day.

Doesn't the F550 use the S130 axle? I was almost sure of that.

So are we to see the Dodge 5500 a weaker, less capable truck than the F550?

They told me they both use the same S110. They rate the rear GAWR on the 5500 at 13,500 lbs and the S110 is rated to a maximum of 14,500 lbs so it does meet their specs.

If the weather breaks enough to wash the salt and grime form under the work truck I'll have to crawl under and look for some numbers. Mine has the "heavy rear axle" and a 19,500GVW.

I thought I read the dodge 5500 would also come in a 19. 5k GVW option.

Why can't Dodge play the numbers game and rate the axle for 40 Lbs more than the Ford?

Instead, Ford gets to have fun in the advertising department and claim highest rear axle rating. Bah. Just play ther number game already.

:-laf :-laf very true, but no mater the brand, it makes me sick to see a company make such a huge deal of a stat, when they only have the upper hand by a few units (HP, torque, payload, etc)

>>>how 'bout that toyota comercial where the guy stops the trailer going down the ramp?? total bs. In the real world he would have jack-knived and flew off the ramp if the truck itself was stopping all that the way they imply.

I should buy a 'yota, hook up my trailer, injure someone in attempt to try this claim, and win a fabulous law suit to retire in style, driving my new Ram 5500 (with exhast brake) and Holiday rambler preseidential. Ooohh Yeaaaaahhh... ... . :D Oo.

Had a little fun tonight with that roadranger site and klenger's speed sheet. The available 3. 07 (dana available, not DC) and 245/70/19. 5 Mich XDE M/S witha dia of 33. 8" gets you up to 104mph at 2000rpm.

More realistically, same 245 tires and 3. 73 ratio, gets you 86 mph at 2000rpm. I think I'd be happy with factory 225/19. 5's and 4. 30 ratio... 70mph at 2000rpm. Heck, even the 4. 88 still puts me at 62mph, which is right where I'm at now.

Thanks klenger, I could play with that thing all night.
