A friend said 2001 rims fit a 1996, but the 1996 won't fit the 2001?

Is this true?

What years interchange?

I have a 96 and want different ones.

Thanks!

Dan

The 01 wheels will not fit a 96 w/o some modifications to the rear brake drums and possibly some front suspension trimming.

01 alloys on a pre 2000

I have a 97 4X4 and put 01 alloys on it a couple weeks ago. The only modifications I made were to trim the rear brake drums down on the outer lip a little over a 1/4 in. , and move the LF brake hose away from the tire so that it does not touch when turned full left. The right side was fine. The rear was very tight around the backing plate but it will still fit. The truck looks so much better now. :D Hope this helps.

JTeague covered the mods to the rear drums but I have heard it only takes 1/8 of an inch off the drums. Your steel wheels will fit on any year just so you know if you intend to unload them after an upgrade. You could go with aftermarket wheels that would have a different offset and fit without mods or go to a 17 inch wheel. Someone has picts of there lifted truck in the readers rigs with 17inch wheels and 37 inch tires, very sweet looking combo.

I like the Mikey Thompson/ american racing forged aluminum wheellike bill swail has on his truck. Same size as the 2001 alloys but with a wider offset to clear the drums.

sweet looking truck?

Thanks! (I can't see past my swelled up ego to know if anyone else is running that 17" combo!:D  )

With the 17" wheels, the wheels don't get anywhere near the brakes. Also, I used the Counteract Balancing beads(www.counteractbalancing.com) for three reasons:

1) no weights to mar the wheels, and

2) no weights to interfere with brakes or fall off, and

3) constant wheel balance corrections for wear and tear.

The Alcoa forged aluminum wheels (also used by MT as their original Classics--their Classic 2's are cast) may cost youj almost the same as a take-off set of '01 wheels. I got my Alcoas in 16x7" from www.southwestwheel who sells them for about $110 each (center caps and lugs extra--on a budget you can use them with stock lugs).

M/T Alcoa wheels are designed by M/T and forged/finished by Alcoa. The M/T wheels are not available in the same sizes by Alcoa. For instance, Alcoa sells a 16x7 Classic wheel but not a 16x8. M/T sells the 16x8 wheel and MANY other sizes not available from Alcoa.

Here's a good one, I purchased a set of 15x10 M/T wheels JUST after they were released for sale in the '80s..... only then they weren't named Classic. Hmmm. Is that anything like being older than dirt?
