ctd purchase-seeking advice

I have recently joined the TDR, and I'm actively looking for a truck (I'd like a four wheel drive extended cab). Can anyone give me some suggestions as to what to keep an eye out for? I will be using the truck for towing my Jeep to the desert, and for long trips between southern California and western Colorado. Are automatic transmissions to be avoided? I will probably be buying something built between 1997 and 2000. Thanks!

Warhorse,

Welcome aboard. hope you have luck in finding what you want. I am partial to standard trannys but thats just me. The big question is are you going to modify the truck for more power and how much are you willing to spend. a clutch can be had for a decent price compared to befing up an auto. in the year truck you are looking for there are the typical problems. dowel pins on the pre 98. 5 trucks and lift pump problems on the ones after that. nothing to worry about though, both are great vehicles.

Welcome to the TDR, the best $35 you will ever spend in your life.

Jstull has it right on the main issues, and they are an easy fix. If you are going to be towing, you can't go wrong with the manual. 6 speed if you can find one.

The only thing that I would watch for now when buying used, is the 53 block. Drivers side, just above the oil pan, towards the front of the engine. I can't remember what years they were in, and even if I found one, chances are good that it will be fine, but I have a tendency to get karma smacked an a regular basis. They have a known history of cracking just below the #6 cylinder freeze plug.

Post again when you get the list narrowed down and we can give you the right questions to ask about the truck.

Sticks,

great call on the "53" block. I didn't even think about it because I've got a "55". I second the 6 speed. Its a great transmission!

If you like the ease of a quad cab, they started in '98.

If you really want a 6 speed they started in 2000 (I think, correct me if I'm wrong)

If you want plug in power, get a 24 valve

If you like to tinker under the hood and make power, get a 12 valve.

Welcome to the TDR, the best and most expensive $35 you'll ever spend.

Well, thanks everyone for responding. Here's what I got: 1997 2500 SLT extended cab, four wheel drive with an automatic. 116000 miles. A few minor blemishes, but overall in very nice condition. I've already put over 200 miles on it since picking it up yesterday. I got 17. 5 mpg today in really bad traffic on the 91 freeway (those in Southern California know about this freeway). Temperature didn't rise above 190, and it was 100 degrees in the Riverside area. I paid 12,000 for it, and so far I'm very impressed. I should have done this years ago.
