If I rotate the tires myself, what kind (or rating) floor jack should I get?

I've used a 1. 5 ton jack to lift any corner of my '98 4x4. Whilst the jack works fine for changing tires, it is limited in how high it lifts (like a few inches at best). If you plan to use the jack for other under-truck work, get a jack that can lift the tire 8-10 inches off the ground. And get jack stands, as you never want to work under a vehicle that's supported solely by a lifting jack.

Spend some money and get a good one, 3 ton minimum. I have to use 2 cheap two ton jacks to lift the front of mine.

Get a three ton. Don't mess with anything lighter. If something slips it may bend a lighter jack. Shop around to get the highest lifting one you can find.

Costco has nice 3. 25 ton w/ foot pedal for $69 #ad
The valving works well, which seems to be the biggest difference between junk and quality...

The vehicle mechanics at work have those air powered hydraulic floor jacks. No pumping required, just push a button. Of course, theirs are huge! They lift the "pushback" tractors that push and tow MD-11's and DC-10's. Does anyone know if there is a lighter duty model of one of those available? That would be a cool thing to have in my "dream garage" someday.

Seems like I saw something similar in the Northern Tool catalog. In different sizes.
They would work either air or by hand. They have a web site. Used to be Northern Hydraulics. http://www.northerntool.com
I think.

The junker 2 ton I use is marginal and it will be replaced with a 3 ton or better. It would be nice to have a couple around anyway.

If you want a decent 3 1/2 ton jack with 2-3 ton jackstands included, that can lift up to 21 inches, check out Sears. Handy for lifting heavy Dodge trucks.

I use the 6 ton bottle jack that I carry in the bed. I also carry jack stands. Works fine for rotating, or anything else.

Thanks for the information. I will get a 3 ton (or more) jack with the appropirate jack stands.

Yes, this is what I meant, but 22 tons is kind of overkill for our trucks! I was wondering if there is one like this, but is only maybe 6 or 8 tons, and at a lower price.

Andy,I've checked around and besides air powered bottle jacks that's the cheapest one I've found. There are 4 ton air powered floor jacks availible, but all of them I've seen start at around $600. Lincoln(the arc welder guys)make a full line of them, but they are pricey also.

Andy,we all knew you were a confirmed bachelor but... I could have been worse. The only advantage of air over pumping it by hand is that it will get it up faster.

Yeah, I know, but it would have been cool to have one more piece of powered equipment. I have a saying, "A man can never have too many tools, just as a woman can never have too many pairs of shoes. "
