I'm looking to drill holes in my stock airbox and was wondering what size round bit (ones used for drill holes for door knobs) I should used.

Has anyone done this and how did it turn out?

Mark,

When TXRam added the PE, the filter minder would get pulled down about 2/3 the way. Even without the filter, it would pull it down halfway. He pulled the snorkle that connects to the fender and told me that that was the restriction.

I did the same and have seen no ill effects.

I agree. Cutting holes in the airbox runs the risk of cracking the plastic, the hottest underhood air gets in, along with dirt, rocks, small birds, etc. #ad

Just remove the collar to the fender, take two aspirin, and relax. #ad
I run the stock airbox without collar, and stock air filter. I haven't yet been able to pick up even one hp on the dyno by propping the airbox open for a run. #ad

Piers pulled out my air horn and it really did help but the extra noise was so bad that my wife and the neighbors made me put it back in.

My remedy for this is to just turn my PM -3 down a few a clicks, unless I pull up next to a ford, of course!

I pulled the horn out and saw no ill efects. . so then I pulled the entire airbox out and put a KNRE0880 on the end of the hose..... WOW now the truck is loud and the boost seems to come up faster... I put the silencer ring back in and it quieted down a bit... still louder than stock. . but not too loud.

i pulled the air horn out, and drilled two 2. 5" holes, one in the front and one in the back of the box, i have not noticed any more noise than stock, nor have i seen any difference in EGT's. but i am more confidant that the engine gets all the air it needs, especially when the boost hits 40psi. i am running a stock replacement paper type air filter. my filter minder never moved with the stock set-up, and i really don't expect it to now either.
