What spare parts to carry for long trip to the boonies

After my trip last year where I lost an injector while camping - luckily I was near a city that had a first rate diesel mechanic/shop, and I had a free tow courtesy of Good Sam Roadside Assistance - I got to thinking about upcoming trips and what I should be carrying. I don't expect any issues with my injectors for at least 100K with the triple filtration I have, and I am carrying a serpentine belt and cummins water pump with me - have had no water pump probs so far. What other spares, if any, should I think about carrying (mainly due to their availability when not near major towns). I am thinking a spare FCA? In tank fuel pump?

I do carry extra filters (oil, fuel) with me as well as my tools when I tow.

My truck has 126K on it presently and is running perfectly at the moment.

Any advice appreciated - I have tried a number of searches on TDR but could not find a good, succinct list of items that one might carry, just in case.

That is a good link. From my reading the in-tank pump should be good for a long while, but if it did go, it might be a long lead item. What about the CP3? I have not read about a lot of failures?

I have also seen the belt tensioner pulley listed in a number of threads. Is this something that goes bad?

Sure they're subject to fail as is any mechanical or electrical part and yes, they will leave you walking if they fail. Pretty much any part you can think of will fall into this category. You'll just have to decide where you draw the line as to how much money you want to tie up, how many parts you want to carry, and where you will be travelling. You also need to consider core charges you'll have tied up in parts like the CP3 pump.
 
I don't know if you might have a Jacobs exhaust brake, but the vacuum pump on those was prone to fail and cause havoc with the serpentine belt. A spare is reasonable and available directly from Cummins.
 
I carry a spare belt tensioner. That seems to be the first thing to go in the pulley system. If that is your original water pump and coolant- I would consider changing it out at home. Then carry

a spare. Use the better quality pump for your reinstall. I also carry the alternator rebuild kit. Upper and lower radiator hoses are not a bad idea.
 
Not a truck part, but one thing I carry in the boonies is a cell phone amplifier. Allows you to make calls when the signal is too weak to work.

I can even get email in deer camp where the signal is so weak it says no service.

I use a Wilson Sleek, it's one of the less expensive amplifiers available.
 
Take care of yourself first. Keep in mind limiting your exposure to extreme cold or heat. Communication, road flares, emergency blanket, first aid kit, way to start a campfire, water, nonperishable snacks, compass, map (as back up when GPS batteries die). Communication can be a CB Radio to a personal emergency locator beacon. A plan: Don't forget to tell family where you are going and when you expect to be back. Also leave a note in your vehicle as to what way you are going if you have to leave it. (add pen and paper to list. Lipstick on the window works.) Cell phones in some places simply don't work even after a hike and that's on the paved road!

You have a good start esp. with a towing service membership. For the more expensive parts it's better to flatbed it back to civilization. Say that spare alternator you lugged around for 30K miles as dead weight. With parts quality like it is all it's going to do is raise your blood pressure after dropping it in and discovering it's been defective and thus truly been 'dead weight' for the last 30K miles. Worse is the replacement gets you deeper into the woods, trouble, and then fails aka infant death.

I suggest: HD jumper cables, tow chain, fuel siphon kit incl small empty gas can, couple lithium battery flashlights (aka dead battery storage containers), chemical snap to activate glow sticks.

That reminds me. I had a flat in VA last week and my call to Good Sam resulted in a recording to call back later. I never did get to talk to a human.
