I changed transmission fluid today and when pulled pan to replace filter THIS{next post} is what was on bottom of pan . does not look like something that should have been in there!! 97 3500 auto with extra trans parts. hope some trans guru will be able to tell me that this part is not very important also trans seems to work okay. not super firm shifts but not the worst Ive driven thanks for any input:confused:

Not a trans Guru - wondering what the material is . . . rubber hose? metal? please describe. If it's a hose it could be someone tried to drain the drans thru the dipstick tube and a piece of hose got stuck/left in the pan? Have you owned since new, somone else serviced trans for you? Anything's possible.

Let us know what the material is composed of.
 
Agree w/bmoeller. Not much else in a trans made of metal that looks like that. It's possible it was dropped in the tube unknowingly? Have you owned since new and is this the first time the pan has been down. If not did you have pan down before and it wasn't there? What's the odometer reading? Sorry for all the Q's just trying to figure it out a bit.
 
It looks like a snap ring from a clutch pack. I have done a few trans services and have found pieces of snap rings in the pan. The trany tech I talked to said it's not to uncommon and normally doesn't affect the trans operation.
