Here I am

What the heck, might as well buy a tractor trailer

Thanks, TDR Staff

You Know You Are a Dieselhead When...

Worlds LARGEST TDI engine

That truck doesn't look right with the rear tires covered like that!!

I can hardly wait to see that cladding with 1,000lbs. of ice and snow caked on it and in it.

Also can see it packing and freezing between the tractor end of frame and trailer possibly not allowing one to turn or causing the plastic to shatter while turning.

Another issue will be airflow when hauling a reefer trailer, the radiator surface on the Thermo King and Carrier units will have to be larger and/or relocated.

On the positive side that will bring an end to LEO's crawling under the trucks to check brake pushrod adjustment, they will have to have pits or ramps at a DOT checkpoint.

Not gonna' work up here but a heck of an idea in a warmer climate.

Mike.

I noticed the 65,000-lb gross weight instead of 80,000-lbs. Also there is no mention of road speed, terrain, city/highway conditions, or wind. A nice way to make headlines...

What I cant figure out is how come someone hasn't made an OTR truck like a train yet. With electric wheel motors and smaller diesel enginge for generating the electric.

Imagine what those skirts will look like after the first blow out :D
Blow out!!!!! a road gator or a deep driveway gutter would just about wipe things out

That's really not great fuel mileage, I drove for CFI, and we could average 7 to 7. 3 most of the time, and i drove it 70- 72 mph, course we had 3:55 rears and 9 speed OD. in them, I wouldn't want to drive that thing, Be worried about tearing the skirts off that thing, Monte

That cladding will be left on the side of the road, first time someone has to hang a set of iron on the driver's.

:-laf:-laf Throwing iron is what REAL TRUCK DRIVERS did in the day, NOW!!! they go hide in the truck stops and tell road stories, drink coffee and wait until it clears up.

OK Big now I have to ask what ever happened on that Honda Pete venture as the article was written in 2009. I am guessing must of been a flop.

Scania has been working on series and parallel hybrid trucks and buses for quite awhile. They have a joint venture going with Siemens in Europe right now looking at electric propulsion from overhead wires, via induction from wires imbedded in the road surface and hybrid propulsion when neither overhead or embedded wires are available.

Oh wow, hadn't thought about chaining up.

So each driver will be assigned a set of chains and an 18v Dewalt Sawzall Kit stowed under the bunk to chop the skirts off when the time comes to chain up... ..... :-laf

Progress, regress... ... ... ... .....

Mike. :)

Indeed, I haven't driven OTR consistently since the mid 90's, but I will never forget the fun stuff... Jess

If and that's a large IF imo, any of those foolish trucks are actually built no fleet is likely to buy them. All that expensives skirting is impractical at best and would be frequently damaged, would probably take out tires and maybe even air brake lines when torn off, and would be very expensive to replace.

Many tractors I saw when I was on the road everyday had damaged fairing panels behind the cab. I can imagine what some retard company drivers would do to those silly wheel skirts in the link.

The efficiency of a train is the steel wheels on steel rails, not the drive system. The diesel-electric drive is not as efficient and a mechanical drive system, as hundreds of HP are used just to run cooling fans on the main generator, inverters, and traction motors. It's used because it's a simple (?) and easy way to get a 10,000 ton train moving without a transmission. It also lends itself to dynamic braking.
