so i bought an 05 2500 ctd about a month ago with a blown up engine . they said the warranty was void because the previous owner had put an edge chip/programer in it and because he didnt clean the air filter enough. does that sound like a load of crap or has anyone else heard of this happening before? truck has 50,903 miles on it !!!!!!!!!#@$%!

There have been many cases of a "dusted" engine because of an improper or poor air filter set-up. Usually you can see alot of dust or oil in the intake piping and on the turbo blades.

So, what's the story? Did it blow up before or after you bought it??? Why the title "What the Hell"?

well to make a very long story short. the engine was blown up previous to my purchasing the the truck after the the dealer told me i could cover the engine under the max care warranty if i transfered the warranty within 30 days of purchase, which i did. then told me it had been "dusted"(which was the actual word used). The what the hell title was because i have never heard of of something being "dusted" before. But i bought the truck for $5k so i shouldnt be bothered, it just didnt work out so i thought i would see if that was an acual term or if i was misinformed on some thing. Now i fell like someone might have thought i was trying to rip them off, but that was not my intension at all. Anyone know where i can search for an 05 cummins engine? LOL

I know a guy who just lost a stock turbo due to a dirty air filter. I hate to see what the insides of his engine look like.

And yes, I have heard of Dodge not honoring warranties after someone is caught using an aftermarket power adder. The dealerships are on the look out for this...

I understand there are a few "dusted" engines in the oil patch states. It happens with aftermarket filters that are not serviced regularly, and with paper filters, especially aftermarket that do not fit the case and get sucked in, or even a Mopar filter that is run plugged. The engine is a giant pump, and when the filter gets plugged it sucks it in the intake piping and allows dirt to enter the intake.

I heard that under super dusty conditions it can happen in a few thousand miles.

Just because the owners manual says X miles as a service interval, you still have to use common sense.

Rdyson, So should be no dust whatso ever in the intake piping? I figure there shouldnt but I have a volant intake and lasttime i took my intake i had i real fine film i guess of dust inside which wasnt noticable unless u ran your finger over it. Im thinking it might of also been oil from the filter, i clean it every other oil change.

Lacuran- The first time I heard the term "dusted" was in 1975 from a guy who had been around Detroit Diesel series 53 and 71 two-stroke cycle diesel engines since they were called "grey marine" (1940's). Apparently, and I saw this actually done, after rebuilding one of these two-stroke engines in order to seat the piston rings you would "dust" the engine with an abrasive cleanser like "Comet" or "Ajax" while it was it was under load on the dynamometer. I couldn't tell you if it worked or not.

I have seen several engines (Cummins, CAT, Mack) "dusted" to the point that they have excessive blow-by. The cylinder walls on every one of these engines was polished like it was chrome plated. That is a sure indication there was a problem with an intake leak between the air filter and the turbo.

well the latest news is , i found a dropin replacement for my truck but he wants $5400 for it . It includes eveything minus the starter, fuel pump, andand i think turbo but i cant remember for sure. I also found a guy that will put the engine in the truck for $1200 i was just curious if this is a good deal? Thats alot of $ for a guy like me.

Lets see, $5000 for the truck, $5400 for engine, $1200 labor. $11,600 in a truck that has to be worth at least $20,000 no matter what shape it is in. If I found a deal like that I would find a way to get the money, and then sell the truck for a very nice profit.

That sounds like a decent price to me.

You said the motor on your truck is bad, do you still have it? You can use the starter, fuel pump, and turbo if it's OK. If not a new turbo will cost you $1,400ish.

How many miles are on this drop in motor?

Like someone already stated, you will have $12K or so into a truck worth about $20K. What kind of condition is the rest of the truck in.

thr rtuck is acually in pretty good shape, it has three small dents in it,black and silaver two tone yes the engine is still in the truck and turbo seems to be in good shape. Ita a 4 door short bed SLT, 6 speed trans, new clutch, rearend , and driveline, truck has 50,903 miles on it. The drop in motor has 21k on it. Anybody want to buy an edge juice w/attitude for the 05 cummins? lol
