Well since my shocks post went so well I decided to run a tire thread. Right now I'm currently running Wild Country Radial RVT (the 3-lug AT version) which suck very much (see sig). The truck came with 33x12. 50xR16. 5's so I'm limited to what kind of tires I can run.



Next time around though (1st of the year) I'm going to go for something with a little more bite. I'm thinking Remington Mud Brutes because a friend of mine works at the local Mom & Pop shop that sell's Remingtons.



I had a 93 Ext. Cab Toyota (first vehicle) with some 33x12. 50xR15 Mud Brutes and after 2 years and 20K plus miles they still had half tread left. My buddy at the shop says that he has a customer that owns a Ext. Cab Long Bed Dodge 2500 4x4 with the 360 (less weight but also a ext. cab compared to mine) and he get's 45-50K miles out of them. I kinda find it hard to believe, but if he can get that kind of mileage out of them than I can get at least 30K with rotation and watching the air pressure.



You guys running 33x12. 50XR16. 5's what air pressure do you run your tires at F/R? The place I had to replace two of my RVT's at over inflated them and I wore my center sipes out of the lugs before I noticed.



I'll stop rambling now so I can see what you guys have to say. Please don't be all BFG BFG BFG. I can't and won't spend $900-1000 on tires when I don't have too.

315's BFG:-laf All terrain's on this baby. They are pricey but the next set will be BFG Mud Terrain KO's... ... Hey you asked;) :D

On my 93 250 4 x 4 CTD I ran 255/85 BFG MT's and a set of 285/75 BFG AT's, loved em both, got 50,000 out of the mud terrains, sold the truck before I had many on the all terrains but I would suspect 50-60,000 miles. It always amazes me that people will spend $120 on sneakers for there feet but try and go cheap on sneakers for there vehicle. My current truck still has the original tires on it but when it's time it'll probably get 255/85 BFG MT's. I like the MT's better because they don't hold the rocks and then huck them at your truck when you're doing 70 mph like the all terrains do plus they get better traction. Also they are a quiet tire as far as Mud Terrains go. Sorry to repeat the BFG,BFG,BFG thing but I've owned a total of 5 sets over the last 10 years and would have a hard time buying anything but BFG's. When I first started working where I work I was the only person with BFG's (22 people work here) now 6 other people have them. Some of the people I work with run alot of miles on dirt roads and have said they've never had tires hold up as well as the BFG's. Other tires tend to get alot of flats form rock punctures. Just my 2 cents Sorry
 
Sorry, I tried to stay outta here with this but, ya know, peer pressure-n-all. I also have BFG's, and have been using BFG's fer prolly 10 years, and love the A/T's, no problems/complaints ever. Thr M/T's on the other hand, I'm not very impressed with, they just don't get alot of millage outta them, they're noisy and they suck in the snow. Wish I could tell ya 'bout other tires but, I can't.

BFG AT - 295/75R16's is what I run. My girlfriend runs the 285's.

Probably the best all around tire on the market. I think the 295's fit the wheel wells nicely with no need for a lift. 285's are nice if your worried about your drivetrain ratio. (IE 3. 54) With the 295's I noticed a little lag until I got the DDII's and the comp;). She likes her 285's though.



I would run the 315's if I had a 4. 10 ratio. :(
 
For a change from BFG mantra.....

On my 1997 2500 4 by, I run 19. 5 14 ply tires, the Bridgestone M724 in a 245/70 19. 5



I know, I know, it's not exactly an off road tire, but I really use my truck for more heavy hauling and road action, so I chose a tire upgrade from Rickson truck to work well with that objective in mind.



I probably run 95 % road miles, 5 % off road, even though it's a 4 by truck. One reason I got the 4 by model is that it's the only way to get the one-ton 3500 heavy suspension without buying a dually.



I guess the BFG guys are getting good mileage from their tires, and I'm told these huge semi-truck types should last me around 100,00 miles. They look great after 25,000, so that's not unrealistic.

Where are you pricing your BFG's? $900-$1000 is too much for four. I ordered mine (see sig) at the 4 Wheel Jamboree last fall at Indy and got a "show deal". $1150 for eight delivered to my door (got a set for my friend also). Granted, this was a great deal, but it's a long way from $900-$1000 for four. Mail order is much cheaper than the local tire dealer. If you can't afford BFG's, I'd recommend General M/T's as a second choice.



As someone already said, you get what you pay for. BFG's are popular for a reason. Also have a set on my wife's Cherokee.



Pressure - I run 50 PSI all the time since I tow frequently. If not, I'd probably run 40-45 PSI. 50 is the max stated on the sidewall.



Frequent rotation really makes a difference, ESPECIALLY with mud tread tires.
 
Guess I'm in left field

I have Firestone A/T's on mine. Went in to Costco to get the Yokohama's, but they won't install 235/85's on a Dodge:--) . So, about the only other choice was the Firestone's. They are OK. Seem to be wearing well despite heavy towing. They are mediocre in snow.



Next set will be a 235/85 (these are 265/65) and a more aggressive tire.



Is anyone running 235/85 BFG's on their trucks? What sort of mileage are you getting out of these with any towing?

Remington Mud Brutes are great tires.



Im running them on my truck now, except mine are Dunlops, which are the same tire with a different name.



Replaced the BFG A/T's w/ these and love 'em. If they go 40k miles on this truck, Ill get another set. If not, then it'll still almost be worth it. They drive fine on road, and excellent off.
 
Bridgstones

I have the 285/75 R16 Bridgestone Duelers on my truck. They wear really good, ride good and have a 50,000 mile warranty on them, plus a good all around tread. As a bonus mounted and balanced everything through Costco was 550$ Can't beat that.



But if your empty take the rears down to around 35 psi. or they will wear in the middle. Nice tire though.

My truck is a welding rig that weighs between 10,000 and 11'000 lbs. and spends a lot of time off road. I've had two sets of Remington Mud Brutes on it and got about 30,000 miles out of each set. Thats about what I drive the truck in a year. My truck is an old 1990 4X4 and it's hard on front tires so I rotate them about every 10,000. The fronts have started cupping on the outer edge by then. Right now I have Remington all terrains on it and am pretty happy with them. In the past I've had several sets of BFG's and was happy with them but have been just as happy with the Remingtons. A local dealer sells the Remingtons at about $60 less per tire. Mine have all been 235 85 16's but next set will be 255's. I keep them all at max pressure and get pretty even wear. Never had a flat or cut a tire yet, in the past I've cut a couple of BFG's, maybe coincidence... JTMcC.

Just put a set of 285 BFG AT's on and so far really like them. Time will tell on mileage. I only got 30,000 on the original Michelins. The BFG's actually have some GRIP. I was pulling a snowmobile trailer up a remote road the other day going through intermitant snow drifts and was a little surprised when I couldn't go any further... . turns out it wasn't in four wheel drive... I thought it was.

Anyway the tires were $668. mounted and balanced.
 
I'm running America's Tire Pathfinder ATRs - 315/75R16s on my truck. The tires have a tread pattern very similar to BFG ATs. I've got 42K on the tires and other than the center being worn more from over inflation I've got no complaints. I believe the tires were $120 each and include a 60K mileage warranty. I won't spend the money for BFGs either, way too overpriced IMO. BFGs were ~$195 each when I bought tires. I don't know if they offer these tires in a 16. 5 size. I also run the same tire - of course much smaller - on my wife's '98 Explorer. They seem to be holding up very well. I will consider putting these on my '85 Toyota 4wd PU before next winter.



On a side note, my dad & I have both gotten +40K miles out of Dunlop Radial Rovers - 255/85R16s.

Dirt Grips

I am runing the Parnelli Jones Dirt Grips and like them alot I have the 36"x14. 5 and they are Load range E (10 ply) but I fear they might not be holding up to well.
