OK, looks like an engine swap is coming up. We're pulling the engine on a 96 auto (~190k) that got totalled due to frame damage and doing standard gaskets and KDP check. Anything else to check or adjust while the engine is free from a body? It will be going in to another 96 5-speed that leaks oil like a sieve.
 
Here's a start:

  • P-pump linkages: de-rust.
  • Fuel lines, both steel and rubber: if there's any doubt, replace 'em.
  • Lift pump: any doubt, rebuild or replace
  • Exhaust manifold: replace if it shrank and broke, other wise give it room to shrink some more
  • P/S and vacuum pump: inspect and repair/replace as needed
  • KDP: inspect and repair/kill as needed
  • '53 block' crack: look for
  • Engine mounts rubbers
  • Harmonic dampener: replace if rubber is rotted
 
Camshaft!

It's easy with the engine out. No cam holder tool/dowels/strings/rubber stoppers/ half cut pipes, etc. Just roll the engine on its side and pull the oil pan (it's probably already off) reach inside the block to guide the cam out, pluck the lifters out, pop new ones in, slide new cam in.



60lb valve springs too.

I would re-torque the head then adjust valves.

I swapped my 1990 5spd into another CTD which had a blown head gasket.

All head bolts were low on torque (tension) on the good engine being re-installed in my other truck.

After this swap was done I started the head gasket. What I found during teardown was a few of the head bolts in the vicinity of the failure were very, very hard to remove due to carbon build around the bolts which indicated the head gasket had been failing for quite some time before it failed completely.

So the purpose of re-torqueing your head is for 2 reasons.

1) The head bolts will accept torque because of the age & mileage and is insurance against blowing the gasket.

2) If you experience head bolts that are stuck your head gasket is likely leaking slightly and failure is in your future.

For under $200 you could put in a new set of rod and main bearings. I would feel better by at least looking at a rod and main bearing, since you have the pan off.
