I have several quarts of not open Texaco Havaline motor oil 20-50 weight. Could I put a small amout in the fuel tank every time I fill up?

Your truck would burn it quite nicely. That is if your "kitty is out to pasture. " I usually burn a qt of two-stroke oil per tank w/ #1 diesel. Our #1 is more like kerosene than diesel, it is very dry from what I'm told.

I have talked to Cummins about this, and they stated that you can go up to a 5% solution of motor oil in the diesel. If my math is correct, that is about 1. 75 gallons of oil per 35 gallons of Diesel. I have put in about a half gallon during a fillup, and I think the injector actually likes the extra lube. It runs quieter.

My understanding is that it's OK to burn new or old motor oil as long as you don't have a "Cat". I think this was discussed in a past issue of TDR. Some over the road Cummins powered trucks have oil tanks and use a system that adds clean oil to the crankcase while burning some of the used oil. I believe they go many thousands of miles without actually changing the oil. I read about this system on the Cummins website last year.

I would think that used oil would need to be filtered very well before adding to your fuel, otherwise you would get rapid fuel filter clogging due to the soot in used diesel engine oil.

Guys, are you sure you can run 'motor oil'? Dont you mean 2-stroke oil? I know locomotives and ships burn just about anything, but certainly not our little peanut motors...

Yup, you can run motor oil. Just dump the oil in the fuel tank. Here is one thing to think about. Many people confuse the black soot as a bad thing in Motor oil. This black soot is actually soft carbon (graphite) and can add to the lubrication properties of the oil. Just because motor oil is black, does not mean that it is contaminated with dirt (silicate. Obviously if the oil turns black very fast, then you have other problems with excessive blow by, and the black oil is the least of your worries.

Yes you can run up to 5% motor oil in your fuel. It must be filtered to take out the wear particles so as to not introduce them back into the engine. The cost to filter the used oil is such that one would not do it, unless they already had the filtering system. As for the soot and graphite issue. Soot is nothing like graphite. Soot is ok down to 1 to 3 microns. It becomes abrasive and causes wear when it gets to 5 to 7 microns. This can happen if the detergent dispersant package in the oil starts to deplete. It will cause wear on the cylinders. If you guys want to put less than 5% filtered used engine oil in your fuel, then OK. I won't be doing it.

Sincerely, Kevin

Well... . I'll just stick to my Stanadyne, thank you.

I've got about a 1/2 a quart of Mobil 10-w30 motor oil left over from my car and you guys are saying that it is beneficial to add it to my tank?
It is about a year old does that matter.
This sounds crazy. I would like to hear from other people that have tried this. What is any difference was noticed.

Adding motor oil in your diesel fuel will not hurt anything. I have dont it, and Cummins says it is OK. Diesel fuel is oil when you get down to it, so how is adding oil to oil going to hurt the engine? It isnt. The quanities being talked about in this threat dont even add up to 1 quart. You probably wont notice anything with such a small quanity. I have dumped 2 quarts in one tank, and the injector pump was a little quieter, but other than that, there was no difference. If I had a good way of filtering my used oil, I would be burning every bit of it.

Do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Motor oil really isn't designed to be burned,it doesn't combust completely and leaves ash deposits. If you want to add oil to your fuel use 2 cycle engine oil. Of course adding a quart or two of motor oil every once in while will cause no problems, but I wouldn't recommend doing it on a long term basis. It's far cheaper to use a diesel fuel additive that's designed for this application than using motor oil.
