Hey maybe you all can help me... I am taking the family up to the Calgary Stampede in July and plan on checking out the east side of the Glaser National(bear country). I don't like the idea of being in that part of the woods w/o a gun. I swear bears can smell gun powder because all the bear attacks happen and all the people can do is bang pots and pans together to try and scare them off.

This being said doesn anyone know where I can lock up my hand gun along the I-15 hiway entering Canada?

dee

you could leave it at my house but i'm about 200miles south of the border on i-15 in helena. my suggestion is to buy some good pepper spray. the crazy canucks don't even mess around with handguns. it could be a real problem at the border. i'm not sure what they think about pepper spray though.

Depending on what type of gun you are talking about, you may be able to bring it up here. If it is a hand gun, forget it!! If it is a shotgun or rifle it may be allowed... ... depending on what exactly it is. Let me know what it is via PM and I can let you know.

Drawson; Hand guns are definitely out, I’m not sure about rifles. My guess would be no. Call Customs or the RCMP and they may be able to help. You might find a gun shop to store your gun before you cross the border. You can’t take pepper spray into Canada. My wife and I got to spend an extra hour in the Canadian Customs little room when they found my wife’s pepper spray. They asked if we had guns, mace or offensive weapons, she remembered the pepper spray and told them. After an hour, and four different Customs agents, I convinced them that it wasn’t mace and it wasn’t a offensive weapon and we got to keep it. Now they specifically ask about pepper spray and you can’t take it into Canada. Don’t worry about the Canadian bears, I hear they are a lot more friendly than U. S. bears. Jeff :D :D :D

Dee, one good turn deserves another. We have a research center in Conrad, MT right on I-15 twenty miles south of the junction with US-2, a little out of your way depending on which way you go. Most of the area east of Glacier is Indian reservation, might be hard to find a place to store. Let me know and we can work something out.

Thanks much for storing the tractor for me. It's been working daily with no problems. Bill

Guns In Canada

Yes you can bring your gun into Canada, but not for the purpose that you have indicated. Personal protection is not a valid reason. In order to bring your gun in legaly, you must be registered in a competive event or with a hunting guide or outfitter. Besides in most provincial parks they will put a seal on your gun before you enter and check it on the way out. Best advice, get some bear repellant, the large size cans that look like a fire extinguisher are legal in Canada.

I is not worth the hasle. We have brought shot guns up for hunting (I grew up in and around buffalo NY and own a house in Canada). It is expencive if I remember correctly. over $100 for the permit fee. Get one of those big cans of bear spray and be smart. Your brain is a lot more effective in bear country than a gun.

The gun I was planning on taking is my Rehawk 44 Mag 5". With my Utah CCW I can carry it in Montana. I would also concide locking in a bus station locker, if there are any up there?

Thanks for all the help and offers!!!

Yeah, Canada is not to gun friendly! My boss has a buddy who has a CCW license here in WA. He went to Canada (without his gun) but still got hassled anyway. Somehow the Canadians knew about his permit... . They asked him all kinds of questions. Where is your gun? "at home" Are you sure you know where it is? "Yes!" Do you have any ammo? "No" Are you sure?, Where is the ammo? Blah, Blah, Blah ad nosium..... Bunch of paronoid freeks up there, Sheesh... (at least thier gov't anway... )

What peeves me is that WA state must be sharing that info with the Canucks  None of thier stinkin business, IMHO!

If not sure about a CCW drawing attention, but a NRA sticker or hat will get you some extra gun questions. I was asked five times if I had a gun by the same Canadian Customs agent. It was either the NRA sticker on the truck or I looked guilty. I had left my hand gun at a friends house before entering Canada, maybe she could smell gun oil. Jeff

Messed Up Priorities

It always amazes me how the Canadian Gvmt. has messed up gun ownership...

If they put as much energy into preventing terrorists from entering our country as they do preventing their law abiding citizens from owning handguns we would all be allot safer !!
