You all always give me the best advice for my Dodge truck so I'll ask for advice for my 1974 Dodge Champion Motorhome. All original with only 25K miles and purrs like a kitten. But, it has some problems, most probably due to lack of use. Here they are:

1) Both 50 gallon gas tanks are full of rust/crud. This is my biggest problem. Tried tumbling one full of pea gravel strapped to my tractor tire - no luck. . Can't find anyone within 50 miles that can clean/boil them for me. Should I replace with plastic tanks? Where can I get plastic tanks? How do I get rid of the old rusty gas? How do I dispose of 2 rusty old 50 gallon gas tanks? You see the issues here...

2) 318-3 motor mounts are shot and almost completely falling out. Should I replace or overlook it? I wonder if I could even get a new set or if I would have to make some.

3) Frame is extremely rusty. Smack the aluminum siding and I get a pile of rust in my driveway. He He. My daughter likes this.

4) Brakes won't release sometimes. Has air power assist. The whole master cylinder and rest of the assembly is rusty. All rubber boots are decayed. Maybe just a cleanup and rebuild will do the trick. I skiied through a gravel parking lot with the front brakes locked up so my daughter and I could get behind the gas station to sit under a shade tree until they released. Oh what fun

Other than this, it seems pretty solid. Everything works and works good! I would really like to take the family on a trip but I am afraid we won't make it out of the county. Last year, we took it on a 500 mile trip just after we got it and it ran OK. Brakes were on for first 50 miles due to rust, I guess. so there was not much pad left when I needed them. Had to stop and buy fluid. Then, on the way home the front gas tank clogged with rust so I switched to back and limped home sputtering. Speedometer cable broke about 20 miles from home. Chirped like a bird then. This winter I replaced about 1/2 of the ignition parts before I finally found a ballast resistor bad. Now she cranks again.

You all have fun with this one.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

I think the motor mounts are just regular pickup style mounts, maybe 5 bucks each.

For the brake thing - that can be fun . When they "hang up", open a line somewhere. If they release then the problem is upstream if they don't release then look downstream.

I had a ~77/78 Class C Dodge with about 29k. Seemed like a great notion when I bought it. Spent that years vacation fixing things, fixing things, fixing things. Don't want to scare you but age can nickle and dime you to death.

JC Whitney sells plastic tanks and cleaner/sealer if you want to use the old ones, it's a lot of work though. Tractor tire works great.

If you want the rig to last you better stop driving it into the ocean. ;)

I use old gas for cleaning parts and starting green brush on fire. Rusty/cruddy gas would be fine to get the major greasy sludge off of parts, then use clean stuff to complete the job.

As for getting rid of the tanks: After the gas is removed and they dry out, they're just another couple hunks of metal. Take 'em to the dump or scrap yard.

Give it to Doc

Give it to Doc T. That way he will have something to take up his time and he want be comming up with all the strange/weird/unusal questions he keeps asking(stirring us up)with. :D

motorhome

Sounds like a complete brake rebuild from front to back, motor mounts should be easy to find and ditto on JC's having gas tank cleaner/sealer or maybe donate the whole thing to school for a class project. ;)

Sounds too familiar

I have a 1973 Winnebago Brave on a Dodge B-series? chassis with a 440. Guy I bought it from had major stuff fixed but every the trip to Spring Charlotte holds some surprise. One year it was the alternator (ran home at night with generator providing 12V - what was that we just about hit?), next year muffler system fell off, another year it was the ballast resistor, then a bad coil.

As my brothers say, "It is an adventure in creative troubleshooting and repair every time she rolls out. " The reason I have it is that the retired friend I got it from didn't want it to go to some non-mechanically-inclined type that would be ****** at him every time it broke down.

I should have known the future when the front trans seal blew out halfway home the night I picked it up.

Now the rear tank has clogged the gen set pickup so I have to take care of that.

Good luck with yours. Mine is a whole lot cheaper than a hotel even though it gets only 9 mpg.

Please, please step back and look hard at what you are doing. From what you have described, any money you spend on that old thing is money gone. Your situation reminds me of that old woman out in west Texas that took a scissors and tried to cut the hole out of her blanket. I took an old thing like that in on trade. I let my salesman drive it the 6 blocks to my lot. I ran an ad in the paper that read: "Mobile deer stand, $750"... ... . and my phone #. It took about 3 weeks, but I sold it. When deer season comes, the hunters will buy anything. Good luck!

Actually, when I get tired of messing with it I will take the chassis and mount my 1953 White cab-over cab on it and make a very unique rollback or slantback carhauler out of it.

Can always set the body off back in the woods and make dry storage out of it.

I wouldn't even touch a project like that. . I'm too busy thinking up mindless stuff to post. Besides. . it's hard enough to maintain stuff that I've bought new.

Junk the motorhome and go buy a nice new one. You can get a long term, low interest loan to pay for it and you can claim the interest on your taxes.

Maybe Powerwagon will take it off your hands. He's good at fixing up old RVs.
