I love my old 12v truck and I really wanted to buy another one but there getting older every day and harder to find one in really nice shape that doesn't have a half a million miles on it :{ . So I was poking around on the net and found an 05' fully loaded with 13k miles on it , after about 3 months of talks with the dealer I got them down to $30,990 witch is twice as much as I intended to pay for a truck but I figured it was a good deal so I bought it. I'm not very well edumacated on these fancy electronic trucks, so I need the low-down on what to expect from it. In other words whats going to break first and so on.

That truck is still a long way from broken in even! The third gens are awesome trucks, as you are finding out I am sure. There are very few weak points anymore. Keep an eye on u-joints and ball joints. They do not have grease fittings anymore and tend to fail before most think they should.

The engine is pretty solid. Increases in rail pressure for performance can be hard on injectors but by this time there are some good fuelling boxes that work within safer parameters. I have had five of the third gens and replaced only two injectors with over 500k miles racked up.

If you start adding power the auto trans will be the first major component to suffer. They are pretty solid up to about 100hp extra. Beyond that it needs a convertor and valve body at minimum and a $3500 rebuild for serious power.

From my experience, with a manual truck, I can say that even a 50-60hp bump wakes these trucks up in a huge way. I rarely use the 100hp setting on my Quadzilla.

Install some gauges and let the games begin. Don't freak when you see 1300 degree egts stock either. The new engines are solid at 1450 sustained.

Enjoy!

Thats a good deal... . these trucks are NOT loosing value... my dad has an 06 that is worth exactly what he bought it for... ... The 6. 7 is keeping the 325 5. 9's at a premium... but its worth it. That is what I paid for my 05 with 10K on it last Nov.

I love mine... EGT's are high on the 325's... but my Smarty Jr solved that problem... And yeah the 40hp tune really made a huge difference. . and thats just timing, no fuel.

Well... I wasn't going to say anything since it is a done deal but 30k plus for an '05 is too high in my book. I bought my '06 this summer for 26k, admittedly many more miles but 30k will pretty much buy you a brand new truck.

I do agree that the 5. 9s are more desirable... to me. To many, especially since the '08s seem to be much less "buggy" the 6. 7s are the better truck. The new auto trans is light years beyond the 48re, plus the integrated exhaust brake. I'm not sure sure it is really happening the way you suggest. For the most part it is just us diesel freaks on this site even aware that there are any issues with the 6. 7. Certainly not enough to sway the market as a whole.

Yeah, i could have had a new 6. 7 for only about 4K more. . . but wasn't worth it to me... and yes the dealers know the 5. 9s are sought after... . And I actually paid 2. 5K less than retail on my truck, even at 30K for a 05... Its just the market right now... low mileage 5. 9's aren't loosing there value at all... .

I agree that 31k is a lot of money for a 3 year old truck but the sticker price in 05' was 48,555 the original owner kept it in the glove box, KBB valued the truck at 35,900 and NADA had it at 34,444 so I didn't get screwed that bad.

By the way thanks to BHolm's FIRST post for keeping on topic.

It was your mula and you got a nice truck that you are happy with. Thats all that matters. As said before yours is not even broke in yet. There are plenty of these 3rd gen's out there with well over 100,000 miles with no repairs only routine maint. Enjoy your truck-my 05 has gone 55,000 trouble free miles so far and I am going to drive it till the wheels fall off. Best thing I have put on mine so far was the Smarty Jr. Nice power much better tourqe curve, lower egt's and better mpg.
