So, my girlfriend wants a turbo. A 2500, QC, long bed, lifted, auto drove by the other day as we were walking back to the truck from Starbucks. She heard it first and when we got in the truck she told me to roll down the window. It had a sweet whistle to it as he slowed to turn.

So, now she wants one! Fine by me! But I know we need other things first! I have a Quad Commander on the way, Smarty will be after that. I plan on running stock exhaust for now, but I will need an airbox mod or new filter setup, then of course a clutch! (I don't think she knows how spendy this is).

So, my question, does the 62 whistle? The fact that the other guy's Dodge did could be due to exhaust, intake, or the turbo itself.

Also, what else besides Smarty do I need to run the 62 or how large of a turbo can I go (besides the 62, maybe SMALLER than the 62) to not need injectors or other box?

And third, she asked me but I was unsure. The 62 is the compressor wheel in millimeters correct? How large is the stock compressor?

Thanks!

Nick

The stocker is 9cm, you can order the PS/SPS in many combination you need to know what your expectations are and future mods to make sure your turbo is back-wards compatible. It does sing or whistle some, the 66 will sing much higher(Some lag & barking). feel free to contact us at any time. although I am in the mountains (Rocky's) at present.

He could have just had a stage 2 intake tube and filter along with the silencer ring missing. My new turbo doesn't sound any different then the stocker with the same 5", stage 2 and silencer ring gone. Any aftermarket turbo you get will already have the ring missing.

I'm not trying to talk you out of a turbo I'm just making sure you know the whole story before you go down the spendy route if you don't have to.

The reason the HTB2 or PS62, or SPS62 performs so much better is a much larger exhaust housing along with a much larger turbine wheel.

2004. 5 and up turbo:

Stock turbo compressor wheel=62mm

Stock turbo turbine wheel =54mm

Stock turbine housing =9cm

PS62, SPS62, HTB2 comp wheel=62mm

PS62, HTB2 turbine wheel=60mm

SPS or HTT71 series turbine wheel=71mm

PS or HTB2 turbine housing = 12cm or 14/15cm

SPS or HTT71 series turb. hsg = 14/15cm

i have a stock turbo with the silencer ring out, an afe intake and straight 4 inch exhuast and it whistles a lot. If all you want is the whistle, you could save a lot of money by just doing that. but if you are planning on more mods/power, by all means, get a turbo.

You better be careful with that stock transmission..... With my mods & 6 inch stacks, I sound like a C-130 or a C 5 galaxy taking off. I turn heads and get thumbs up everywhere. I swear I'm on every picture phone in this town... :D

Yes, it will be for more horsepower too, in the long run, but an intake and clutch (after gauges and Smarty) would be the first to go in. The whistle would be a benefit, but not the whole reason I would go to a larger turbo.

I may look into an AFE.

Thanks for the info. I see the turbine wheel is where the diff is. Makes sense now.

I get this too, I can make my silverbullet 66 sound like a transfer truck, It is really cool to have the sound of all that power and head turning effect!!

Nick you may want to be careful as to what size compressor you chose. it may sound cool at 5000 ft but when you crest vail pass at 10k plus it will surge real bad. To the point you may break it. Ask others that live at altitude before you buy. .

Us high altitude guys have a different set of rules from the flat landers!

I had to replace the bearings in my b1-03 after only 6~7k miles when it was used as a single. It surged real bad at 8000 ft and up. I tried to wastgate it and it was better but still surged.

works good as a secondary ;) but a set twins will be very $$$. they do sound cool, just different from a single.

Towing at altitude is a good point. Once I got my 5" turbo back on there along with the Megacannon stage 2 AFE, my stock turbo would surge. It sounded like it was going to huff itself to death. As long as my RPM's didn't dip below 2000 it would be ok. That was towing a 10k toy hauler up 7-9% grades anywhere from 6-10k altitude. I hope my new turbo does ok but I knew for sure I didn't want to go to a 66 or larger like I would have liked to for dyno HP but I needed practicality instead.

Damn, I do feel bad for you guys that have to run around at 5k+ ft elevation. If you guys want a big turbo, I guesse twins are almost the only option if you tow. I would trade living in S. E. MI for Missoula, MT (lots of family and birth place) if I could figure out how to make a living there. Merry Christmas guys!!

I don't have any trouble with my HTB2 62-14 surging. I have run up over 10000ft before and haven't had any troubles. The only time I have got it t surge was while showing off with a smoke show at 8000ft  .

And maybe a 62mm compressor wheel is ok. but people were pointing him toward a 66. also were you towing anything? I did not have a problem running empty, just towing.

Empty I could only sustain 30 + psi for a very short time then I would have to back off. Not enough time for the turbo to huff.

I am usually towing something and that b1-03 wasn't cut'n it.

I always heard the 66's were worse at surging. I have never had any surging problems while driving empty or towing. I have towed around 7000 lbs as high as 9000 ft.

If you want to hear a whistle try the AEM Bruteforce. I have one as well as my neighbor. I hear his truck whistling from across the street while he backing his trailer in. The AEM whistle can be heard while crusing down a residential street at slow speed. Try something like this first. Then save for the big ticket items like a transmission.
