B&W Companion 5th wheel hitch

Improving Tow Capabuilty

I just stumbled across this unit. It is a pop up but larger then most. @JMetzger, it seems some good ol trailers are out there without dropping big money, no apology needed. What do you guys make of this?

Hi,

It is hard to tell from just pictures shown on the internet on how good a buy this unit is. The first thing to ask your self is, will this unit satisfy you and your wife for a few years? If so then this may get you into camping for now.

I would look the unit over very very carefully to insure their is no water issues or other hidden issues.

When we bought our Starcraft 8 (used) the canvas would leak right at the joint where the roof and the canvas meet. This is why the owner got rid of the unit. I remove the canvas and fix the roof leak to eliminate the moister problem.

We had the unit for 6 years and travel from Colorado to the MI UP. We sold the unit for the same price we bought the camper 6 years earlier. Never could do that again, but this was one of the best units and times we had camping with the kids in my opinion.

What I pull now I would not consider camping per say it is just a different way to see the country and enjoying the outdoors easier.

We started RVing in 1990 with a 1979 Jayco Cardinal tandem-axle pop-up. That old tank was the largest pop-up Jayco built and slept 8 people!! The roof and canvas had just been replaced by the Amish (we lived in Ohio at the time), and we picked it up for $2,500. We camped in it 6 years, and all I ever had to replace was 1 tire that threw a tread on a summertime trip across Texas - we pulled that thing from Lake Erie to the Rio Grande several times. When we moved on to a 5th wheel in 1996, we sold the Jayco pop-up for $2,450.

Total cost of ownership - $50 and 1 tire. :-laf

We still talk about the trips we made in that Jayco. As far as I know, the young couple we sold it to may still be using it.

Rusty, that reminds me of my first camper. In the mid 70's when we had one toddler and a set of new born twins, I purchased a used 1968 10. 5' Travel Queen truck camper for my F250 Ford gasser. It was a great camper. I paid $1,550 for it and traveled many miles and made many weekend camping trips with it. Fifteen years later I sold it, in great shape, for $1,500. It way outlasted the Furd.

Cost of 15 years of satisfied ownership was $50. 00.
