brother in law has a '90, would like to upgrade to approx 400 hp and still be able to tow his race car ... probably gonna get a city dodgezilla or piers 40 ... question is what turbo came on his 90?

18cm housing we believe ... what the potential of this turbo ... he would like to tow 8000ish and keep temps down ... . and power up... what are your thoughts? (did a couple of searchs to no avail)

Mine is a 90. I put a 16cm housing on mine. I tow a race car and the exhaust temp does ok (I bet it would be fine if I backed off the fuel screw), but the coolant temp climbs up there pretty high on steep grades. You can look at my sig to see the other mods I have. If one of you guys can give him a horsepower guess at what mine is running, maybe it'll tel him where he's at.

Hope this helps,

Jim

If your brother-in-law plans to tow that much weight, and make that much HP, an intercooler and upgraded radiator are a MUST. No ifs, ands, or buts. These engines are only good to about 220RWHP non-IC, if that much. If he decides on an HX40, he'll have to get a 4" exhaust, and a custom downpipe. ALso see if it has the original head gasket, or if it has been updated. I can tell you now that it wont support even 225 HP; been there, done that. If you change the HG, check the head for cracks between the intake valves and injector bores. If the cracks are small, you can run with it for a while, but an updated head with 7mm holes would be recommended by most on this board. THe clutch will need upgraded, along with relearning how to drive, so that the transmission survives the 900-1000 lb-ft torque. IN all reality, he wont need anywhere near 400hp to tow just 8000#- 225 should be plenty- but I guess it would be nice to be able to smoke the Flowersmokes now and then. I towed 8-10K all summer long in 2000 with a stock 92 auto. Did just fine going up and down I 25 and up into the mountains.

This falls into the "DUH" category, but a pyrometer, with t-couple IN THE MANIFOLD and a 40+psi boost gauge are a muct as well.

Happy BOMBing,

Daniel

he has a banks intercooler ... 4 core radiator ... pyrometer ... nv4500 ... boost gauge

Well, your b-i-l will be able to do that I would think. If he goes with the HX 40 please keep the forum advised... . my son wants to use a 40 in his S-10/89 CTD rig... ... for similar reasons I'm sure!
