Cummins Turbo Diesel is ranked Top Engine for Chrysler Group and #1 Diesel Pickup Engine as reported in the J. D. Power Study.
In the 2002 J. D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study, the Cummins Turbo Diesel in the Dodge Ram had the fewest reported problems of all Chrysler Group vehicle engines. Cummins was also the #1 diesel pickup engine in this study, with far fewer problems reported than Ford Power Stroke and GM Duramax diesel engines.
J. D. Power ratings are based on responses from nearly 65,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2002 model-year cars and trucks surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study, now in its 16th year, is considered the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality.
Measured on a problems per hundred basis (PP100), the Cummins Turbo Diesel for the Ram 2500/3500 series pickup scored a 9. 1 engine PP100 rating. By comparison, Toyota’s non-luxury average was 10 engine PP100 and the total non-luxury vehicle average (without the Chrysler Group) was 20 engine PP100.
Notably, the Cummins Turbo Diesel performed well above average on the "Engine Lacks Power" issue, with 2. 1 fewer PP100 than the non-luxury category (without the Chrysler Group).
Regarding Cummins performance, Gerry Christofferson, Supplier Quality Manager at DaimlerChrysler conveyed to the leaders of Cummins Midrange Engine Plant (CMEP) and the Chrysler Account Team: "I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you and your team members for the performance [on the JD Power Report]. It clearly indicates the progress Cummins and DCX teams have made over the years to understand the customer’s requirements and provide them consistently. "
This achievement is shared by both DaimlerChrysler and Cummins people who have worked side-by-side to deliver the highest quality engine in order to delight owners.
Special thanks go to the CMEP associates, Supplier Quality Assurance, the Product Assurance Teams, Advanced Quality Planning, and all members of the extended Chrysler Account Team for this performance on the J. D. Power Initial Quality Study.
