being a new diesel owner and a firm believer in syn. lubs. my question is in colder weather, shorter trips and not towing are lighter weight oils O. K. ?i. e. 10-30. also read a very good article about oils on lincolnsonline, but I do'nt believ e he covered this.

05,6spd,3500,k&n in straight 4" out,banks high ram,edge juice attitude,amsoil everywhere. 22-24 mph with a light foot.

Cummins Priemum Blue Extreme

Premium Blue Extreme (by Valvoline) is a 5W-40 synthetic oil that I use. If you use a 10W-30 make sure it is API CI rated. Check you owners manual, lots of good info in there. Ken Irwin

If you check your manual 30 weight is not recommended. A better choice would be 5W-40 synthetic. You can have your cake and eat it too- low temp performance and still enough viscosity for protection at normal temps.

I am running 5w-30 Amsoil snythetic in the engine with a Donaldson extended life filter. I also swapped the gear oils for Amsoil 75-90 extreme gear lube, and the t-case ATF for Amsoil synthetic ATF. Once I am up to 20k miles I will do the auto transmission in full synthetic as well. I have already noticed a milage increase and the truck is at 3000 miles. I ran the same combo in my 2005 for the 30k miles I owned it. I don't think the 30 wieght is of any consequence, many have run this oil for years and not had a problem. I REALLY like how the truck starts in cold weather, it is a huge difference. I like milage improvement and I double my change interval over dino oil making the costs nearly identical.

nomogas, i see you allready use amsoil, what more do you want? they all are good for like -50* we will never see that! i dont think ? also fix your sig it says mph instead of mpg !!!!! good luck :-laf

While I can't say Mr. Carter is wrong, as I don't have an '05,

My 2001 manual says to use 10-30 or 5-30 synth depending on temp and block heater use.

My truck's bearings looked new at 99,600k with nothing but 15-40 for the first 60 or 70k and 10-30 rotella in the winter since.

I will use synth in diffs, but in the engine, I just change every 5 or 6k and call it good. Also the Stratopore filter from fleetguard is awesome. the stock filters are around 35% at 10 micron, the Stratopore is 70% or better at 10 micron. And my oil at 3-4k is green, not even black yet. worth the extra 3 bucks.
