what wheel has the traction on the front & rear of a 4X4 with no limited slip? I will have to chain up to get up my driveway tomorrow and I thought if I chain up 1 ft wheel and 1 rear wheel just to get up the driveway it would be no problem. not sure what wheels to chain Up? thanks, Luna

With an open diferential whichever wheel has less traction will spin. By chaining one front and one rear you'll have the opposite ones spinning.

Going uphill it is best to chain the rear (both sides) but if steering traction is going to be an issure the front would be better (in 4x4). The problem with chaining the front is the steeper your hill is the more weight transfers to the back, thereby decreasing front end traction. So just how steep is your driveway?

Scott,

my drive way is not real steep but I have to make a 90 degree turn and go up into the garage so I can't get a run at it. thanks for the info. Luna

Sounds like a candidate for chains on the front. With the diesel engine your truck is heavy on the front end anyhow so you should have no trouble. Keep in mind your tire clearance in the front changes as you turn and chains can cause a lot of damage to you truck if they don't have enough room. With stock tires you should be fine though.
