I have a 97 3/4 ext. 4x4, 4:10 gears, with a 5-spd, and 160,000miles. It is has a stock trans and clutch, stock timing, stock fuel plate that is slide forward, plugged the wastegate, 4in straight pipe, two turns on the gov. spring, egt and boost gauge, and a friend did something to the annord. Some days it seems to have more power than others. The max booost i get is 36pds and i get around 16 mpg daily driving. I was told to go with a #10 tst, but some people say the clutch won't hold it? Will the clutch hold? I am also planning on adjusting the timing and maybe a spring kit. It is my daily driver.

We have the same trucks. I started out with the #11, the max recomended for the stock clutch. If your clutch has 160,000 on it it might not hold up to it. If you think that you might someday go with a GSK, go with the #10, it is a better match for it. My bet is that your clutch wont last long what ever you do. So get what you want, and plan on a clutch

I'm now running a #10, 3000GSK, 370 inj with a SBC con OFE
 
Your clutch will not hold the #10.



Bought my truck with 122K on stock clutch..... slipped it a couple of times 2 months before changed the clutch at153K. But at the time I actually changed the clutch it wouldn't slip. I had the 3K GSK at the time with the factory plate full forward.



Put the #10 in my truck the night before I changed my clutch..... took it down the road just to see if it would slip... . slightest load on the throttle and it slipped. If you eased into it however it wouldn't slip.



My advice... . don't install a #10 unless you have a clutch handy or in transit.

I agree with the guys above, the stock clutch can not hold a #10 plate. I upgraded when my truck had 96,000mi on it and the clutch felt strong with the stock setup. I choose the #10 plate because the TST chart said the stock clutch was not strong enough, that was the kind of power I wanted. When I put the #10 plate in (stock postion) you could tell the stock clutch was at it's limit when going hard up throught the gears. :D After a few weeks it was slipping in 3rd, 4th and 5th even when I slowly depressed the accelerator. At the present time I am installing a South Bend Clutch.

a follow up #10 plate and 4k gov. springs yes it will. Throw in the PDR HX-40 and 5" exhaust, not happy. But held up fine none-the-less. Now throw in the PDR 370's (I know he (they) didn't personally make them) and can you say neutral! Cause I thought that's what happened last night, but NO, it was just slipidge(sp). Jeff
 
my clutch was moody... it did not like the 11 plate... . since then, I have gone through 3 more clutches! Stock injectors, and still in the 400+ club!

I've heard that the stock clutch will hold about 700 ftlbs of tq.

Not the same clutch but my 02 6 spd holds 742 ftlbs and hasn't slipped for 25000 miles, unless it is in 3rd and trying to do a burnout:D
