Ok, so i am about to drop a good amount of coin down in my truck (trans, injectors, turbo, FASS, RAD) for reliability and performance but was considering putting that money down on a new truck and selling mine and then leaving the new one alone. I'd really enjoy the whole warranty thing again, the 4 doors, bigger cab, quiet motor, and NO VP44 issues! I would be into these two trucks for about the same money, be it the hopped up 01 that I have or a stock 04.

What would you do?

If you like the new body style, a quiet engine and don't mind the performance of a stock truck, go for the 04.

I would stick with the 01 since it really is a lifetime truck. The new one has too many electronics and the VP44 should be good after a FASS is put in... Keep the 01 if you still like it!

I'm not sure what HP or torque you have with your mods, but if it's about what you'd get out of a 325/600, I'd go for it. As you said, the warranty is nice; four inch is exhaust standard. bete turbo, better pistons, better valve seats. They have made significant changes/improvements over the years, and, yeh, electronics are a part of them, but that can be a plus when, say Edge or VA can control timing as well as pressure and duration. Just a small box would probably get you up over 400 HP easy ( that is if the 'bug' bites you again somewhere down the road). MHO. Good luck, either way.

What's the chance that you won't get the bombing bug? Lets face it, you're probably going to be dropping more money into the new one as well to get that personalized look it seems you like. Besides, it's way more fun to work on your own truck to get it to where you want it (power and looks). Have fun with the 01!

i'd say it depends on which body style you like more. You can get either engine to put out the same power, but you can't change the body style. I prefer gen 2, so I'd stick with the '01. The just seem heavier duty to me.

Have you added up all the accessories? Mud flaps, floor mats, bed liner, running boards, exhaust brake, gages, just to name a few. If I had to outfit a new truck with all the extras I now feel are a minimum it would add three grand to the cost. And then you have to factor in Uncle Sam. There goes another three grand. And no matter what people say, every time you trade out of one vehicle and into another you take a hit. Dealerships don't sell trucks for free. Is the cost really the same? How long before the 01 is paid for? Think how good she'll look to you then:D :D :D AC

My Vote is....

As you see, I have an 02 3500 (2d gen) and my has an 03 2500 (3d gen).

I really like both. Here's how I'd approach the decsion ( and actually have):

1. Space: If you need to carry more than 2 folks, trade; if not keep it.

2. Warranty: unless you trade every 3 yrs/36K miles, you'll fequently be trading to keep warranty. Look at going out af warranty as being set free. :D

3. Sound (or noise): The 2d gens are noisey (made even more that way I might add). If noise is an issue, trade; if not keep it.

4. The new truck effect: everyone loves to buy a new truck. If this is strong in you, trade; if not keep it.

5. Accessories: The real deal. Nothing of mine stays stock and both our trucks have grill/brush guards, headache racks, toolboxes, Geno's rolltop bed covers. etc. .

6. BOMBing: I swore I would not BOMB my wifes truck. First gauges, AFE Mega Cannon, Aerotrubine exhaust, Edge EZ. Point here is BOMBing is contagious. You will give into the Dark Side. :D

Finally: I bought my 3500 in Aug 2002, just as 2003s were bginning to be delivered. I had $5K in BOMBing upgrades and accessories. Most wouldn't work on 03 and I would have had to drop about $2K more to have the truck the way I wanted it. So, I traded 00 2500 for 02 3500 and transfered everthing on the dealer's back lot: Exhaust system, injectors, exhaust brake everything.

I'm still happy with my 02. But, the 03 is nice too!

Good luck with additional BOMBs or Good luck getting a new rig.

Honestly in my opinion, if the wife would let me I would trade my '00 off in a hurry for a new 2004. 5. New bodystyle, stronger from the factory to begin with and a little more room in the backseat. I guess it really depends on what you want though.
