I can get a 1997 2500 Dodge with 12V, Manual for the right price (IMHO)

The truck is smashed, so figure everything from the back of the cab, backwards, is shot.

I'm hoping the axle is good (haven't seen it yet, but a D80 would be nice)

What would you pay for the truck; I figure it has at least a NV4500 with Tcase, and full (running) engine?

I'm wondering if its worth getting even if I part it out.

With all that damage and that many miles on the clock, you better get it real cheap. Does it have a salvage title?

A clear title will be a huge factor. The engine as a core goes for ~$2000 at a junkyard. If the rear end is shot I wouldn't give more than 3k for it.

One more thing to check is the turbine housing if the exhaust took a hard hit in the back. I've seen them break the housings because the large exhaust that diesels use is quite stiff and not prone to bending.

If it's the orig. transmission, it should be the Dana 80.

Sight unseen, I wouldnt go more than $2500

There can be problems you wont find till later.

Engine alone is worth that much.

97 2500 came with Dana 70's - only 3500's had the Dana 80 for what it's worth.

The manual transmission 2500's had a Dana 80 in the rear. The auto trannies had the 70 in the back.

I don't know what a Dana 80 is worth, but I sure would have loved to get my hands on one when my Dana 70 went south and ruined the housing costing me $3K. I searched for days with no luck. i wish now I had bought a new 80 since I have had to do the carriers again since then. Seems like they go out every 75K like clock work.
