There may be another First Gen in my future (keep kicking myself for selling my '93) and I've been wondering how to get the least electronics. I know there is no computer to run the motor (correct?), but it does run some dash functions (speedo, tach, a/c????)

I've heard the '91 and earlier has no computer at all. Is this correct? And does that include the 1991. 5 when they became intercooled, or did the intercooling go hand-in-hand with the computerization? I realize there may be a difference for manual vs. auto trannies, but if anyone can elaborate for both, please do! (Looking at 89, 90, 91, 91. 5)

Just would like to minimize the electronic wizardry if I buy another First gen. Also, would a 1993 still run if the PCM was totally fried... what would be lost?

Thanks guys!!! Still love this forum!!!

Scott

91. 5 has PCM which runs alternator, A/C, heater grids, O/D, etc. , but doesn't have Check Engine light or trouble codes.

If you get rid of the fuel shutoff solenoid, any first gen will run even if you lose everything including the alternator. (providing its running or you jump it to get it started. )

Yep. 91. 5 does have a standalone regulator. I've got a '92 shop manual for my 91. 5, and the '92 seems to have the regulator on the pcm, but the 91. 5 is an odd 6month duck not related to before or since.
