I just went out and did the key click proceedure and here is what I get now, for codes

P0500 - P0460 - P1693

P0100 didn't come up

On the OBDII list

0500 = Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction

0460 = Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Malfunction

1693 = Turbo Charge Control Circuit Malfunction

The situation: I installed the CarQuest pusher pump and had all the wiring connected as per Evan's and Riflesmith's descriptions for wiring, except for the wire going to the lift pump. I unplugged the lift pump connector and was testing the wires to determine which one worked as interupted when the pump turns off (my truck doesn't have the red wire at the lift pump, that Riflesmith mentioned). That was when I noticed the engine light and the code that I first mentioned.

Before I started working on the wiring, I hot wired the pusher pump, to be sure the system functioned correctly and the truck ran. After I noticed the code and engine light, I plugged the lift pump back in and tried my test, with the hot wired pusher pump again and then the engine wouldn't start. I get 15# before and after the lift pump, with the pusher pump running and I bled the line up to the injection pump.

I'm going back out to see if maybe I knocked some wires loose. Can't imagine that, with how tight these things fit.

I clicked for times - quick on and off

I now believe that I have toooo much air in the system. I also ran my tank down to about an 1/8th so I wouldn't get a bath when I cut the line. I think that might be contributing to my problem. I get a clean steady stream of fuel at the schrader valve on the injector pump though. I have loosened each of the injector lines, at the head and cranked the truck enough to get fuel pouring off the bottom of the engine. It's a pain in the tusch, doing it alone and I've only been able to get the engine from a fairly smooth crank to shaking a lot while cranking, so far. Hopefully it will go tomorrow when I try again. I'm tired of messing with it for tonight.

If it's air in the lines, I can see now why I should have gotten a 12v! Thought you'd never hear me say that, didn't ya Wayne?

If you were jacking with wires you better check the fuses! There is one in the interior of the truck that will allow you to crank. . but not start. The motor will also die if this is pulled while its running. Its worth a check, you might have zapped a fuse and didn't know it... or the 2 pumps is to much draw on one fuse. Thats if that fuse has anything to do with the pumps. Good luck.

PS might want to check the spark ;)

I think...

I think the P0100 code means a fuel problem. I think I have seen it elsewhere in the forum for VP44 failure. Hopefully I am wrong. Someone please correct me if I am. You should be able to do a search and come up with it.

Good luck on getting it fixed. Have faith in the fellow TDR members!:D

Thanks for your replies guys

OK - I guess I better tell you what an idiot I am.

During the process of finding a good source for the wire that I needed to tap into on the lift pump, I pulled the fuel system relay and installed one of those add-a-wire adapters that you use to fit around the spade of a fuse (hoping to locate the wire there instead of at the fuel pump). That turned out not to be a good source, so I removed the connector and popped the relay back in. During the night a light came on in my brain and I realized that the female connectors that the relay plugs into would probably spread apart with the extra thickness of the wire adapter and cause the relay to not make contact. When I got up, I went out and put the wire adapter back in and the truck started right up.

Don't try this at home! I was really dumb and could have screwed up the computer or something.

Yesterday was an all-around bad day and I shouldn't have even started the project, knowing that my mind and body was not running on all six cylinders.

Everything is back to normal now and the new pump is working great. I'm sure my wife will be able to hear it running, but I had to climb under the truck and hold the pump to make sure that it was. I'm running with 13# at idle now, and that's with a worn out lift pump that registered 7# at idle. My gauge isn't long enough to test while driving, so I can't give any figures on wot conditions.

The only sparks this engine got was from me pounding on it with a crow bar  Good thing the crow bar bounced back and hit me in the head. It finally got some common sense.

Common sense

Doc, do yourself a favor and let the wife hit you in the head with the crowbar, it saves dents and scrathes in the truck and eng. And if she does it before you start the project, might even save you some money hehehe. chuck.
