Here I am

What's a good used year to buy a Cummins ISB Ram truck? Why do you like that year?

I really like my Ram 1500 ecodiesel truck but since the AEM update, my mileage best is 20.4 MPG. Piss poor. My 2007 3500 Ram 5.9 Mega Cab that I traded in for this truck did better. I keep getting exhaust gas regens that eat fuel like no tomorrow. The truck seems to drive the same as before as far as power goes.
Are 2010 6.7 ISBs any good? I see one locally for sale that looks new, Laramie, RED and fully loaded but 150K miles. I may trade my 1500 in on it.
What is the best years in the newer trucks? Is a 2010 a good year or should I go back to 2003-2007 5.9 route? I want it as simple as I can get it as far as EGR, regen, etc to mess with.
Thanks again, Herb

For MPG you have the older pre-emission trucks or the newer 2013+ DEF trucks. The 2010 EGR DPF mess just wasted fuel choking on it's own EGR to keep NOX down. Then non-stop regens to burn that soot off... Want trouble: get a 2007.5-2012 emissions strangled truck that attempted to meet emissions early without DEF. Yeah, OOPS!

Actually the TCO with similar MPG would be better with a gas engine 1500 truck. Fuel is cheaper, less maintenance...

The amount of money you are going to loose in a trade and never find MPG again can buy a LOT of diesel fuel.

Really the best way to get good mileage in a 04.5-07 5.9 was to trust the overhead lie-o-meter.

I’m willing to bet your 07 wasn’t doing nearly as good as you thought.

I hand calculate mine, and the EVIC is quite close, on hiway after a settled reset, and long avg around town. My long avg right now is about 18, and that’s a 7 mile daily loop with about 70% stoplight and 30% light highway, no hills. People can’t believe the numbers I pull with a vehicle so heavy.
To the OP, I agree. Either a pre DPF truck, or a SCR model would be your best bet!
Good luck!

Trick is finding that clean one owner that has been maintained. But usually someone who is meticulous about maintenance will keep there truck, not trade in or sell one that isn't very old. But its doable you have to be patient.

2015 or newer. Power folding tow mirrors added in 2015. 2016 adds front park sensors and ability to move cameras around on 8.4 display/mirror display.

DEF is a non issue, and a better deal than the earlier 4th gens, EGR does not have to be cleaned. I love the Aisin and 3.42 gears. Freeway cruiser. We full timed for a year and a have at 24,500 combined weight, making two round trips to Az and back, and the low first and second gears got the load moving great.

Empty the DEF trucks get 2-3 better MPG. 1-2 better towing. VS the earlier 4 gens.

Man, y'all are all over the board. We have two saying 2015+, one saying 2013+, and two saying 2010-2012.

I imagine the statements about "pre-DEF" and "older pre-emission trucks" don't help the OP. What years are you referring to?

"older pre-emission trucks" 2007 5.9 and older.

"pre-DEF" 2007 6.7 to 2012

DEF trucks 2013+

I say 2015+ because the 2013 and 2014 had more recalls including buy backs.

I love our 2018, it's one of the last G56 trucks ever built. But hate the tall gears and the emissions. Oh forgot the TPMS that is retarded as well. Other than that it's got every option I want because I ordered it that way. ;)

For now the 3500's don't have the TPMS. They have a TPIS, Tire Pressure Information System, that displays the pressure and system faults excluding low pressure. It lets you run whatever pressure you want without nagging...

The 2500 system could be useful, but, lawyers and liability IMO do not allow changes to the rear fully loaded settings to unloaded settings. (Because TPMS is brought to you by: "Warning this Ford is equipped with Firestone Tires".) Running loaded: a 2500 TPMS system told us we had picked up a large bolt in a tire. Got off the road before complete air loss and resulting complete tire failure caused major damage.

You can adjust the TPMS settings with AlfaOBD.

Yes, I did that a couple weeks ago on my 18 2500, much nicer ride when empty.
I didn't want to set it too low, instead of 80 psi I set mine to 65. The TPMS alarm will trigger when the pressure drops 20% bellow whatever value is set.
I am running empty with 65psi on the front and 55psi on the rear (cold).

Go down another 10 lbs on the rear and ride will improve even more. SnoKing

Yes my 2014 has had a lot of recalls, but has been a solid truck. 10 recalls to date, what has the 15 model year had to date .

You could go lower. 3500's don't even have warnings.

I'd set it to 30 psi if it were my 2500.

30psi means the alarm will go off at 24psi.

I thought about doing that but... I'm afraid of going that low because when I am hooked up loaded and set to 80psi, the TPMS will not trigger until the tire is dangerously low (if I should get a puncture while on a long hwy trip). By them I could be in trouble if I don't notice the low tire.

Just depends on if you go lower than 55 often or not. I do.

:) warning or not, pressure is my main screen. Nothing else I want to see constantly.

My air pressure loaded is 80, mild towing 65, empty 40, and 30 hunting/snow and ice around town. Just wouldn’t want to deal with any warnings. My Tacoma light was on most the time, it was useless to me. At least we can see each tire on these.
