A 12v or a 24v... . Pushing the LP and VP44 to the side. I want something thats going to last longer. Looking for only a manual trans. What are some of the big costs involved in the truck keeping these trucks running? A/C systems?
my own opinion is that the 3rd gen has the best chance for long life. however this could be based on the fact that 3rd gens are still relatively new in age, and that we may not have encountered their age related problems yet.
then again, there are many 1st gens with over 500,000 miles and going strong.
BTW the new 134a air conditioning systems are easier to service because the 134a is readily available. but for the older R-12 systems, i have had very good luck converting them to 134a with a $20 kit from NAPA, Walmart, etc. . so the AC may not be an issue
age of mechanical components may be the deciding reliability factor. therefore newer is better.
If you put aside the LP and the VP44 they are EQUAL (12V and 24V). But thats putting a lot of money aside. I think the front end parts are the most spendy on these trucks. Everything else seems to last.
