I had to replace mine late last summer. Found a straight one off a 1 ton, but with no light bar (the plastic trim panel had the holes for it so I had to buy the light bar from the "stealer" to fill in the holes - of course ). With repainting to match, the whole thing came out to about $600 . The gate itself as I remeber was about $275. Then add the paint job, Line-X to match the bed, light bar, misc. hardware, etc. Every other option seemed to come out about the same or more.
If anyone is in Southern Calif. and looking for a tailgate, I have one. Never used it; replaced it with fifth-wheel tailgate. E-mail me for information.
Every farmer I know that pulls a gooseneck cattle trailer keeps an extra U-shaped tailgate out behind their barn. Most will sell it to you if you promise not to tell who you bought it from. Its only I matter of time before I have a costom U-shaped tailgate of my own.
I paid $250 or $350 for one for my '96 3500 a while back, after a friend who was having me tow his car on his trailer boo-booed and smashed it in. I was lucky and found one the right color (and came off a '99).
Got mine from the used Dodge parts dealer in Rancho Cordova, CA.
