auto transmission question

trying to help my cousin sell his truck.

01 7. 3 6 speed. standard cab, dual stacks, b&w gooseneck, ranchand front bumper, 120 hp chip, somewhere over 170,000 miles. little rust and a few rock chips. he wants to sell it cause he is looking at an 02 ctd, dealership offered him 9k for his and he thinks it is worth more selling it outright. he thinks it is worth closer to 12 or 13k. any thoughts?

In excellent condition, pre 6. 0L Fords are pulling huge money right now much like the '98 12-valves and late 5. 9L common rails are doing. I've seen several, especially the crew cab F350's, listed in the low $20's and selling fast. Of course, those were very well kept, low mileage examples, but the market is out there.

Generally speaking, you can always sell something private owner for a few thousand over trade in value. If he isn't in a hurry, have him test the waters a little and see what happens. Making the truck look as close to stock as possible may help it appeal to a wider market of buyers, but that all depends on how much of that type of prep he is willing to do.

7. 3s in good condition are bringing a premium here in SE Texas right now, especially Expeditions since there's really nothing else in their class as far as a large SUV suitable for RV trailer towing is concerned. Anyone that knows anything about diesels and wants a Ford is trying to avoid 6. 0s like the plague and really doesn't want the 6. 4 either in a used truck.

Sold my 99 7. 3 crewcab Lareit 4X4 dually for 12,500 in may 07. It was in excellent shape put out 324hp and 666tq but it did have over 322,000 on the factory motor. Just got tired of being out ran by the 5. 9s

NADA says that Clean Retail value is $9,100 for a 2001 Ford F250 Super Duty Pickup-3/4 Ton, with Turbo Diesel V8, Standard Shift, Regular Cab.

is it 4wd? if not, that price is about inline with the mass market (craigslist, ebay) going rate.

if it is 4wd bring it to the pacific northwest... it will sell at a Ritchie Bros auction for more than that.

thanks for the input guys. he made the decision to price it at 13k with the intention of coming down on it more than likely. it probably has about 2k worth of mods on it. i hope he can get 11k myself. but its not always easy to get someone to pay extra for mods on a truck.

here is the post on craigslist.

2001 Ford F-250 Powerstroke

well i cant believe it but he sold the truck a few weeks ago for 13000. he got lucky and found someone that wanted to pay for the mods done to his truck. sad part is i thought he was gonna get a ctd to replace it but apparently he is looking for a 6. 4:rolleyes:. anyway thanks again for the help guys.

Slap him and take him for a ride in your truck and see what he say's but what ever you do talk him out of the 6. 4 turd .

Furd owners are different. Don't waste the effort or emotion, you won't persuade him. Let him buy the 6. 4 and see for himself.

If he never pulls anything heavier than a small boat trailer on summer weekends or for an annual vacation with a small and light travel trailer he'll continue to love his Furd. The Furds used as passenger cars are usually okay and will spin the rear tires if they add power enhancements. It's only the ones that are used in heavy towing service that are guaranteed to fail.

He got lucky, got a great price for his old truck.

He is now looking for a WHAT???????

Some folks can't stand good fortune. :-laf

Mike. :)

I would have advised him to go for an early 3rd gen. with the 305 engine, it's a much better chioce than an '02 which does not have the front axle disconnect. I guess it's a moot point now. Wait 'till he sees how that 6. 4 can drink fuel, and I hope he has the means to lift the cab when that becomes necessary.

Furd owners are different.

that is the truth. we have 7 dodge/cummins in our family and one tractor with a 5. 9 as well. they are used for everything from daily driving to heavy farm work. my 01 and my dads first gen get used in less than ideal conditions, dirty, dusty, rough gravel roads, beating thru fields, and dragging loads of anything you can think of over those roads and fields. The bodies may be rough but we have had few issues with the motor or the drivetrain. At the end of the day its his choice, i've shared my thoughts with him and he nows the abuse these trucks will take, i'll refrain from any comments about stupidity cause he's family. :-laf

You are of course, absolutely correct. However, the third generation has optimized driveline angles with its high pinion front axle, as opposed to the second gen. 's conventional axle placement. Earlier second gen. 's overcame this with the disconnect in the RH axle, so even though the driver side axle was turning, the passenger side was only turning the disconnected half, resulting in no rotation of the ring and pinion and associated driveshaft.

That era second gen. would benefit from a free spin kit just like the third gen. trucks do.
