Sizing a intercooler

Someone has told me that this guy has a Chevy CC 4x4 that has a 12v cummins in it. From what i've been told is this truck is a:

86? Chevy Crew Cab 4x4, Cummin's Motor, Chevy running gear(transmission, 205transfer case, 14 bolt rear end with 4:10 gears, 35" tires). Now the part i call BS on is he's saying driving it decent it's getting around 23 mpg and 20 mpg towing a 4k trailer. . What you guys think? True or Bull$h**?

I get 17 - 20 mpg in my 03 and my 94 was in the 20 - 23 range. The 12 valves due to lighter emissions standards get much better mileage.

You sure can get 20+ MPG towing a 4000 lb trailer

well that is if You put the trailer Up Front - push it - and have it full with a 4000 LB Electro magnet that would PULL YOUR TRUCK:p

It is possible if he drives it right, like 55 mph.

The 12 valves-especially the early VE pumped motors-- can do that.

Especially considering 4K isn't much weight, and if it's not got a large frontal area, wind resistance would be a minor factor.

i call b. s. i have three first gen's. the only one that would hit 23 mpg had a 3. 07 ratio. empty and under 60mph, it would hit 23.

Whats everyone think ? I call B.S

My 92 with 3. 54s gets 20mpg plus and around 16 with a heavy stock trailer thats around 12,000

The old gm 6. 2s got 20 mpg if you dont drive it like a gas and find its

purfect cruise speed they will get that type of milage mine likes to cruise at 72

Depending on the trailer I call it true. I have 3 first gens all of them averaging over 22 around town with me driving and I have a heavy foot.

the thing of it is, if he has a 86 model with gm drivetrain, he is running a transmission with no od. to get the hd gm running gear, [which a crew cab would have] ment you either got a 400 turbo transmission, or a 4spd manual. not to mention those were some heavy a** trucks when empty. i had a 84 model two wheel drive just like it, and have two latter model 93/94 models , both with od transmission's , all three diesel powered. all of my gm diesel truck's[have 7 currently] would either match or in some cases slightly beat my dodges in the mpg dept. if the man drives 55mph, i say he could see the mpg stated. driveing at highway speeds, fatoring in wind drag, the load of the 35in tires and the weight of that thing, i still say b. s!

I have a neighbor guy with a '93 dodge. Empty cruisin gets 26 mpg. Trailer gets around 17. It does have a mushy auto trans.

I would question if your '86 repowered truck has a 5. 9 or a 3. 9. I put a 3. 9 into a '95 3/4 ton 4x4 extended cab longbed. Beatin around town gets 25mpg... hooked to a mower trailer that carries no more than 4000lb. And it definitly ain't stock fueling.

first off the truck would be lighter than our 3rd gens. has smaller differentials which take less power to turn. 23mpg driving shouldn't be that far off. but 20 towing i think may be a little off, but then again it could happen. 12v aren't big power trucks from the beginning.

Milage

I`ve got an `86 chevy ,1 ton cc dually 4x4 with a `92 12v ve pump , h1c/14cm turbo, 3. 73 gears,4l80 trans ( jet controller) ,205 transfer case, and a gear vendor o/d , 3 fuel tanks ( total 100 gal), the truck weighs 9300 lb. crusing 65 mph I get 22 mpg, if I cruise 75 mph I get 20 mpg. when I pull my 5500 lb tilt bed trailer with a 545 ford tractor ( about 12,000 lb) I get 14pmg. It`s no ball of fire, but it get`s the job done, and has been doin` it sence I put the engine in back in `92. If I pull a 31 ft airstream ( about 7000 lb) I get 16/17 mpg. :):)

Had my truck on a scale a couple nights ago with a couple people in it. Fuel tank was just above 1/2, which holds 44 gallons when full. Tipped the scale at 10,260 lbs. Got my best fuel economy ever in June driving from Jackson, WY to Missoula, MT and had almost 1/4 tank left. Mileage was an astonishing 19 mpg on B20.

Most of my driving had been under 45 mph through Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. I thought it was my speed that made the majority of the difference, but realized later it was mostly my boost.

I then tried to keep my boost at 0. 0 or under 1 psi, which meant my speed generally stayed under 60 mph. My next tank was over 18, the following 17. 25, then just 15 mpg. I've not only been driving faster on shorter trips, but also using air conditioning on a regular basis. I have 3. 73 gears. I would previously average 13 in the city and had previously seen a best of 16 mpg.

Just before the record breaking mileage I made 17 mpg while driving 85 mph from Washington, across Idaho, Utah, and into Wyoming. Go figure. I find his mileage claims to be remarkable and very hard to believe. A crew cab is a big truck! And he has 35s with 4:10s compared to my 37s and 3. 73s so he's turning higher RPMs than mine and from testing with my truck, I'm certain my mileage is better at lower RPMs and less boost. I see about 7 psi on the flat at 85 mph. Doesn't run a lot of boost cruising.

Even if he's swapped in a 700R4 or 4L80 those numbers are hard to believe. Makes me curious about how he has his engine tuned. With mine, the more power it makes, the better the fuel economy. I haven't refilled my 7 gallon water injection tank with windshield washer fluid lately so there is likely a causal relationship for my recent drastic drop in mileage. Same fueling station last 3 fill ups. Looking forward to seeing how I do pulling my 31' enclosed trailer.

IMHO if EACH and EVERY tank is not recorded and checked the fuel mileage means nothing. Minimum three tanks as an average is the only way to be close. Also, how accurate is the odometer? Especially with a conversion, it could be reading way high. I know that I could do a single tank test and get 50+ MPG if I wanted, but it is not realistic.

I have the VE pumped 3. 07 rear geared with automatic transmission, well tuned and empty my best was 24 something mpg... And I calculate every tank. Towing I get nowheres near that. BS flag flying high on that one...

I say no BS Because, My Dad drives a box stock 94 auto, 2wd, tows a 23 ft 5th wheel, drives like a old man, because he is (92) and rarely gets above 55, gets 23 mpg towing. It depends on your speed.

But for this 86? Chevy Crew Cab 4x4, Cummin's Motor, Chevy running gear(transmission, 205transfer case, 14 bolt rear end with 4:10 gears, 35" tires). getting around 23 mpg and 20 mpg towing a 4k trailer. . I say BS!

My 92 still has the 4. 10s, 35s and I was lucky to get 15 mpg towing a 23 ft Airstream at 65mph. I have the records to back it up.
