i was wondering what the differences will be from the current 3rd generation CTD's to the 04's, i know they must meet new emission standards. was just wondering if anyone had the heads up on them. what are the pro's and con's of the new engines?:-{}

I talked to a Cummins engineer at the North America Farm Machinery Show in Feb, and he told me that Dodge would not change to the Jan 1, 2004 compliant engines until the day they had to. He said they had worked with a couple of emissions systems and had found one that was very durable to meet the new standard. He would not elaborate, but said don't be surprised if it is not an EGR system????? I plan on buying an early 04 and would love to know what changes they will offer. The engineer also said they have a lot more power in the engines if the DC power train Nazi's would let them turn it loose.

In the current engine, which will be the same in the early 04s and mechanically the same in the post- Jan 1 04s. From talking to him, they might tweak 10 or 15 LBS more torque out of the 04s to "keep up with Jones'", their will be no real difference.

I would expect 04s to show up in late Aug. or early Sept. like always. The only difference is, I want one of the first of them to have my name on it.

My prediction for the 2004. 5 (no basis for this, just speculation):

From the current HO of 305/555, raise the powerband by 100 rpm to 3000, raise the torque plateau by 20 lb-ft - presto: 325/575, ahead of the 'Stroke again.

Some of the aftermarket box builders are saying that the 03 HO motor has the ability to make more power than the past CTD's. Without changing anything but the timing and duration of fuel pulse they were seeing 130 rwhp above stock with no more injector, turbo or fuel presure increase. Can't wait for mine to get here. :D
