Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) What's "normal" fuel pressure???

I finally went and bought a fuel pressure gauge set. I got the electric with two senders, one for pre filter, one post filter. I installed a switch, so I can gauge the drop across the fuel filter.

Here's the problem. I'm idling at 36PSI fuel pressure. From what I've seen, this is abnormally high... . isnt it?

I mashed the engine, and couldnt get it to go below 25. This is just around town, on the open road I'm certain it will go lower.

I do have a snubber hooked up, and I will have to verify this with a mechanical gauge (glad I put a tee in the setup now!!!) but both senders are within one PSI of each other, so I got to believe it's reasonably accurate.

What is actually considered a normal reading?

Around 25 is normal, mine varies between 20 and 25

Deezul's numbers are right on. I read 18 at idle and 22-25 running. When FP is too high it can cause problems like increased likelihood of leaks and a overworked lift pump. Cooker had a similar problem recently, I believe a new overflow valve cured it.

Where is the best place to get a electric fuel pressure gauge kit for my CTD? How much do they cost?

I had my overflow valve apart a while back, guess I pulled the spring a little too much. :-laf :-laf



I got my gauge setup from Jegs. The whole shebang was about $85. 00, theyre Cyberdyne, the senders say VDO on them but came in a cyberdyne box. One gauge, two senders.

I got a switch from radio shack for $3. 29, and the three gauge pillar mount with tweeder was something like $50. 00 from Genos.

I also had to tap my filter housing (I did this about a year ago) and buy some brass fittings, and diesel spec hose with clamps.

Oh yea, I made a bracket for the senders out of a piece of sheet metal. Soon as I'm back to work, I'll make one out of stainless or aluminum.

Thanks for the replys. I'll pull one of the shims and see if this gets me in spec.
